This is a classic movie on its own merits. If you can sit through the "frog round-up" with a straight face there is something basic wrong with you. The "boys" are individualistic, delightful, and capricious. The chemistry between Nolte and Winger grows on you, and all this is beside the point of the storyline. In other words, don't read the books first, if you're dead set on reading, read them after you see the film.

Why isn't this available on DVD? It's a mystery to me and many others. You'll never get tired of seeing this one over and over. This movie is off the entertainment scale which doesn't happen often. You may even pick up some small details you missed the first few viewings.

I know that this is a very popular film, but I never understood why. To me this tale of infidelity and ethnic caricatures, borders on offensive! I would love to see how people would react if African American families were handled the same way. Yeah, I can see it now everyone in the film is picking cotton, eating fried chicken, watermelon and talking with a speech impediment! Or maybe Asian families with everyone running laundry up and down the street with a rickshaw and.......... talking with a speech impediment!

Please don't start hitting me with hate comments, I am not a bigot, but I like equality for all people and the Italian's are taking it pretty hard in "this-a dull-a un-a-romantic comedy". There are a few good scenes scattered through this film, but overall it baffles me why ... Read More

I don't own it yet, however, I am going to; soon as I can get it from Amazon. I gave it 5 stars back when I first saw it and I still do. I first saw it way back in 1956 or 1957. Those were the last 2 years I spent any time in my home town. After we started our family, I kept our "home fires burning" in whichever port his ship was stationed. I remember one of those was the year I saw the movie, because I was visiting my home town while my husband was "Away" on his boat(ship). At the time, it gave me lots of fear and concern about my husband, because it was so realistic. I saw it with my best girlfriend I grew up with. I loved it except for it causing me to worry. I sat and cried all the way through the movie, but I loved it because I loved Jeff Chandler, and of course I related him with my husband. My girlfriend ... Read More

Ok, here goes:

This movie is a bit of a tough watch, and a tough one to rate. The positives are the acting - Connery, Pfeiffer, Brandenauer, etc all play their parts very well. And the settings were good - Russia looked like what we (American point of view, here) imagine it to be, and the same for Portugal...

I'd like to give it more than 3 stars, just for the above reasons and the fact that I personally liked the theme.

Unfortunately, the plot is tedious a la the LeCarre novels of the Karla trilogy (Tinker Tailor, Smiley's People, etc) written for 1970s pseudo-intellectualism with very little of the action we've come to expect from "spy thrillers" such as the Tom Clancey genre. The plot can leave you yawning at times and its easy to get destracted watching it unfold in the first ... Read More

VHS : In the Line of Fire
I won't deny that parts of this film work, very well at that, but in the end `In the Line of Fire' comes off rather generic, without much differentiating it from the masses of similar films shoveled out to us on a regular basis. The acting is decent at best, at time even horrid, and the scripting (which is really the films saving grace) tends to fall into clichéd territory more often than not. Sure, it is exciting and in parts is delivers just what we're looking for, but to be honest there are many other films that hit their mark much greater than this one.

The film pits Secret Service Agent Frank Horrigan against the evil Mitch Leary in a game of cat and smarter cat as Leary taunts Horrigan with his plans to take out the President of the United States. Horrigan is haunted by memories of his days with President ... Read More

VHS : The Water Engine
This is the type of film that should be shown to students of history and political science. David Mamet is one of America's better screen writers/directors of the smaller, independant film. Those of you who viewed Tucker might enjoy this similar story of a man ahead of his time. The big budget film Chain Reaction with Morgan Freeman was probably inspired from this gem of a movie.

William Macy does a good job as a man of dreams/visions who comes up with the ideal engine run on a cheap power source, H 2 O. His invention produces the domino effect. Big business becomes threatened and shady characters enter his life, uninvited. Oil companies don't want competition. This thread of the story line looks like it was taken from today's headlines. Now that gas is looming at $5 dollars a gallon, what would happen if this invention ... Read More
