VHS : Alice in Wonderland (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)
Early on in Walt Disney's career, he had wanted to tell the story of Alice in Wonderland. As early as 1923 he had begun a series of short films, which featured a young girl in the role of Alice and integrated her live-action performance with animation. So it's no surprise that he wished to make a full-length film based upon Lewis Carroll's classic stories. What is a surprise is that, in 1951 when the film was finally released, Walt Disney was extremely disappointed. He felt that the film lacked an emotional center and that the characters were weak and unmemorable. Perhaps his discontentment was caused by his high expectations or maybe Walt simply didn't understand that the film was a masterpiece, but whatever the reason for his disliking the film, it has gone on to become a classic (of all ... VHS : Star Spangled Rhythm
It's wartime, and this film is tailor made for the troops missing the good old USA! A few soldiers return home on leave to visit family. Eddie goes to a famous movie studio to meet his father under the assumption that his father is the head of the studio. In fact, Pops (Victor Moore) is just a security guard, but he doesn't want his son to be disappointed so he enlists secretary Polly's help (Betty Hutton). They gain access to the head cheese's office and in the process, accidentally promise Eddie to get major stars from the studio to star in an all-star revue just for the military.

There are so many wonderful stars in this film, all of them playing themselves. Bing Crosby and his son Gary appear. Bob Hope takes over as MC in his bits. Paulette Goddard, Veronica Lake, and Dorothy Lamour ... Read More

VHS : Entertaining the Troops
This documentary of how Hollywood mobilized to support our troops at home and abroad during WWII is unequaled. It is by far the finest of its kind ever made and everyone needs to own this warm and affectionate tribute to both the troops and those who did all they could to keep morale up when the outcome was in doubt.

There are wonderful still photos and film footage supplemented by modern day interviews with no less than Dorothy Lamour, Maxene Andrews, Frances Langford, Bob Hope, Patty Thomas and Tony Romano. The latter four were all part of Bob's troupe, who sit around a patio table and remember what those tours were really like.

It shows shots of Clark Gable, Alan Ladd, Jimmy Stewart and Glenn Miller, who served during the war. Miller would not come home. But it mostly deals with how ... Read More

VHS : It's in the Bag
Fred Allen makes me laugh. He may not have that effect on some folks, but the bassett-faced, baggy-eyed, acerbic & brilliant radio writer/performer with the ironic and cynical deadpan delivery has always tickled me. Alas, he's virtually unknown but to a few today, and as his main medium was radio with doubtless few if any shows extant we only have glimpses of him in a few films and his writings. Allen was a true humorist, finding the absurdity in himself and his culture, and while his humor could be stingingly sharp, it wasn't mean-spirited. A lost art, in many ways.

I can only recall him in "The Ransom of Red Chief" episode in "O'Henry's Full House" and with Ginger Rogers as the radio couple episode in "We're Not Married" for other appearances on film. At any rate, we have "It's In the Bag" ... Read More
