VHS : The Magnificent Ambersons
This 1942 classic was written, produced and directed by Orson Welles (who is also the narrator) and based on the 1918 novel of the same name by Booth Tarkington.

The movie chronicles the life of Isabel Amberson/Minafer (Dolores Costello) - a matriarch of an Indianapolis family dynasty - and her pompous son, George Minafer (Tim Holt), who destroys what has taken several generations to create due to his jealousies and greed.

With the backdrop of old money and the new ways to seize a slice of the American Dream, it is a timeless story of a perilous journey on eroding trails in life during the heavy rains and cold crosswinds that are bringing permanent change.

The original rough cut by Welles clocked in at an epic length of 2-hours, 28-minutes, but he ultimately ... Read More

It is impossible to watch this at time breathtakingly beautiful movie without sadness not least because what survives is a mere fraction of the movie made by the great William Wellman -the studio interfered in the picture excising great swathes of the footage Wellman shot and adding a ponderous voice over narration declaimed in sonourous mannner by Howard Keel which adds nothing to the picture whatsoever .
It is a movie about the destruction of a way of life -that of the mountain men .The source material is a novel by Bernard de Soto which is based on the life of one such man , Flint Mitchell ,who controlled the trade with the Blackfoot Indians in the Rockies during the 1820,s .In many ways he was the very incarnation of the pioneer spirit , a trader and adventurer married to a Native American ,and the ... This is one of the better historical films made about the war in the Pacific. and the 'thirties and 'forties aviation navy.

I was in naval aviation near the time this was written about, and know the aircraft depicted. The depictions are accurate; one of the rare movies not to throw in the wrong airplane in a battle scene. Like many other similar films about that period (Midway, Pearl Harbor, Tora, Tora, Tora, etc.) using U.S. Navy film footage from the color documentary, filmed aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, The Fightin Lady, the footage shown was appropriate for the type of aircraft shown, including my favorite naval fighter of all time, the F6F "Hellcat" Grumman fighter which is credited with shooting down nearly eighty percent of all Japanese aircraft shot down in combat in the Pacific ... This is one of the greatest westerns ever made. I've seen all the Earp movies and this is by far the best.

VHS : San Francisco (1936)
This film is a blend of a romantic musical, a disaster movie and an old fashioned morality play. In some respects it is a replay of "The Dancing Lady",in which a talented Joan Crawford is rescued from her downtown burlesque dancing job to become the featured dancer in Gable's uptown musical extravaganza. In the present film, MacDonald, as Mary Blake, undergoes a similar transformation from singer in Gable's(Blackie) Barbary Coast night spot to an opera house owned and frequented by the Knob Hill elite. However, she feels obligated to sometimes return to Blackie's Paradise club, to perform there. In this film, it's Gable's character who is pursuing a reluctant MacDonald, whereas in "The Dancing Lady", it was Crawford's character who was pursuing a hard-to-get Gable.
With her striking operatic voice, newly arrived Mary clearly ... Read More

VHS : Cromwell
Very good movie about the English civil war between parliament and the king. Both Richard Harris(Cromwell) and Alec Guiness(Charles) are excellent representing two different views of government. While the king lost the war and his head, the political situation which started the war was never really resolved. Cromwell became "Lord Protector" a king in all but name, until his death and the restoration

Stagecoach is without question one of the top three western movies of all time. It's a joy to see the young John Wayne come into his own in this great movie. An interesting sidelight is that the director, the renowned John Ford, suggested that Wayne do his classic look of putting his head down and looking up. He used that move from then on. In addition, thiis was the beginning of a long and successful relationship with Ford. The other actors gave great performances and Claire Trevor was at the top of her game. Watch it. You'll love it. VHS : New Adventures of Tarzan
I almost gave up on this after one chapter--the acting was pretty poor and the directing was bad. But I read enough about it on the internet that it renewed my interest, and found it worth watching after all. (Just barely.) In addition to the bad acting, the cliffhangers are full of cheats.

Serial producers apparently loved to take former Olympics athletes and try to take advantage of their fame, and Herman Brix was no exception. He had been the number two choice behind Johnny Weissmuller for the MGM Tarzan pictures. Brix won the silver medal in the shot put in the 1928 Olympics, and had been a football and track star at the University of Washington.

Apparently Edgar Rice Burroughs wasn't terribly pleased with the way his creation was handled at MGM, so he formed a production company with Ashton Dearholt for ... Read More
