VHS : Disney's 101 Dalmatians
Modern technology has taken live-action filmmaking to limitless heights, but there are still some stories that are more suited for feature-animation. Dodie Smith's "The Hundred and One Dalmatians" is one of them. Walt Disney knew this and his "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" is one of the most loved animated films of all time. Unfortunately, director John Hughes did not and his live-action remake, "101 Dalmatians, comes up short in the end.

It is not a bad film, but it is incredibly awkward and extremely unfocused at times. Instead of a seamless blend of animal and human characters, we are now forced to get involved almost solely with the two-legged heroes of the picture, which is occasionally sweet, but obviously not right for a film that is supposed to be about dogs. Pongo and ... Read More

"Do you know how a male newt proposes, Bertie? He just stands in front of the female newt vibrating his tail and bending his body in a semi-circle."

Hands down, this was the funniest part of the whole season one. No, I know, it doesn't sound funny, but it's a visual thing. Trust me, it's worth it. I'd give the last two episodes of season one five stars, but the first three earn only three stars because, well, it's a bit of a slow-moving show. And I'm not just talking about its lack of explosions and other CGI-eye-candy present in most movies and TV shows today (at the expense of a plot, oftentimes). Even taking into account the style and sly, subtle humor, it took awhile to get warmed up to the characters and get into the show.

There is something delightful about watching something ... Read More

VHS : Stuart Little
My almost-three year old loves this movie and watches it repeatedly. After all, there's a cuddly mouse doing people things, there's cats, and about half the movie consists of chases of one sort or another. There's also a lot of seamless and convincing animation (except for the "talking" mouths on the cats, which looks goofy). Any fans of E.B. White's book Stuart Little will be wise to avoid the movie, as they have nothing in common except the existence of a mouse-sized boy. It's as if the Hollywood folks made the movie first, and then decided to put a famous name on it, without any care as to the actual words in the book. It's too bad. The movie's plot is mostly fine for kids, who haven't learned to watch critically yet or expect self-consistency, coherence, or variation from standard hackneyed scenes and themes. Adults ... VHS : Life with Judy Garland - Me and My Shadows
This is undoubetdly the greatest biopic ever made. It's been several years since I first saw it on television and no matter where I go, I still hear people talking about it. I don't think I've ever experienced another television movie that has had such a strong and lasting hold on it's audience. It manages to get under the skin of it's central character, the phenomenal Judy Garland. It tells the story of her triumphant and often unhappy life as straight and honestly as any movie possible can, never letting us forget how brilliantly talented and troubled she was. There is an affection for Ms. Garland that permeates every frame of this film and infects its audience no matter how many times one sees it. Watching the brilliant performances of Tammy Blanchard and Judy Davis actually allows the audience to experience the greatness ... Read More

VHS : Bonnie Prince Charlie
Despite the subject matter I found this movie to be quite dull. This is unfortunate as the story of the '45 Rebellion is anything but that! I think the casting of David Niven as the Prince was a bad choice. While he tries to put energy into the role, Niven is just too English! Also, from what we know of the Prince he was not such an inspiring figure. Like most of the Stewarts he tended to be moody, headstrong and could come across as detached and arrogant. He was also quite foriegn in his outlook and knew little about Scotland other than what members of the exiled Stewart Court in France and Italy divulged to him.

The film itself is impressive visually. But the story progresses slowly and is more atmosphereic. Jack Hawkins plays well as Lord Murrary, the leading Jacobite general. The clashes between him and the Prince ... Read More

BAMBI

Rick tries to kill himself with laxatives because nobody listens to him. The boys have a wacky adventure to the laundrette that ends in disappointment. Neil remembers that they've been chosen to represent Scumbag college at University Challenge. The rest of the episode is the absolute best of the entire series. Bambi's secret past comes out: "Bambi Goes Crazy Ape Bonkers with His Drill and Set". The posh kids challenging Scumbag are played exquisitely by Ben Elton, Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry and Emma Thompson. Hard-core fiends agree that this one is best. It is right hard to disagree.

NASTY

Neil takes a bath in muck, wears one of Rick's frilly little girly dresses, and is nearly electrocuted. Vyv and Mike try to set up the video for their "all night orgy of sex and violence". A mysterious package arrives ... Read More

be careful if you buy the american version of this movie. It has significant cuts in content by comparison with the British version. I bought the american DVD to replace my VHS tape and was disappointed.
