VHS : The Rounders
This amiable modern Western benefits enormously from the casting of the great genre veterans Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford as two veteran cowboys ,forever on the verge of abandoning their nomadic lifestyle and settling down ,but never quite making it.The movie revolves around their attempts to tame an especially recalitrant bronco named Ol Fooler-who it is suggested is a little like the two men in being stubborn ,hard to tame and determined to go his own way but likeable and who eventually will be coerced back into the mainstream

There is not a tightly constructed plot as such ,more a series of incidents heavy on the humour which -be aware ,is often slightly risque (there is a shot of bare bottoms for example which may bother the more prudish ).

Ford and Fonda are wonderful ... Read More

VHS : The Apartment
Very, very good and a bit sad. And most frighteningly there is a scene early on in the movie that shows show Jack Lemmon working in an insurance company in a sea of desk. I would say "pre-cubicle days" but it was nearly duplicated at an insurance company in New York in real life around 1989. Had I seen the movie beforehand I would not have been able to work there without giggleing every time I entered that gigantic room.

Fred MacMurray was wonderful, and in this movie I can really see what people saw in Shirley MacLaine. And it really started me off on watching more movies by Billy Wilder. Which are adult films in the right sense of the word. If you are 16, the odds really are that you are just going to "get it". There are things to laugh at, but the horror aspect of it all might ... VHS : Irma La Douce
Yet another Billy Wilder smash hit, `Irma La Douce' pits the wonderfully charming Shirley MacLaine against the hilariously witty Jack Lemmon in a comedy that is every bit as smart as it is unforgettable. This is one of those comedies that sneaks up on you, getting better and better as the film progresses onward to its end, and then the ending is one that takes you for a loop and makes you reevaluate your whole understanding of the film.

It's just wonderfully constructed from beginning to end.

The film tells the story of Nestor Patou, a policeman in Paris who happens to take the law seriously. Unluckily for Nestor, he's the only law-abiding citizen in his district, and when his clean and polished ways rub the police chief the wrong way he finds himself without a job. After a chance ... How could anyone consider this funny? I enjoy (mildly) some Jerry Lewis movies. The Nutty Professor and The Big Mouth, to name a couple, get some chuckles and a few laughs out of me. But this thing--The Ladies Man--is horrible. Fancy sets and carefully staged pratfalls aren't what make a comedy funny.

6.Raw Force (1982) starring: Cameron Mitchell, Geoffrey Binney, John Dresden, Judi Brooks, Britt Helfer

This is a dreadful movie; low production values, mediocre editing and turgid writing. Why did I buy it and enjoy it? It took place in my home town of Riverside, CA and a bunch of friends from my old karate club had parts as thugs in the movie. I doubt anyone who does not share my local interest would find this movie worthwhile.
