This is a fantastic true story about a boy, his mother and his family who are caught up in a communist revolution. If anyone is in doubt about what a choke hold communism can put on a country, see this movie. After you see the movie you might even come to the conclusion that US Senator Joe McCarthy(American patriot, anti spy - anti communist Senator who was railroaded by congressional liberals and the press to the point that his name was made into an adjective in American dictionaries. They made an outcast of him and forced him to live the rest of his short life in disgrace. In 1995, upon the declassification of the CIA's "Verona project", this great man was proven right about everything he claimed including the people that he accused of being communist spies.) wasn't such a bad guy. Mr. Holland's Opus
This DVD is a bit long, but it includes some great music, fine acting, and many touching scenes. I saw it on TV one evening, and decided I needed to get the DVD so I could watch it several more times. Richard Dreyfuss is outstanding as Mr. Holland, a high school music teacher and father. The film covers his life from his first days as a teacher to his forced retirement many years later. His love of his wife and deaf son as well as his dedication to teaching touches many lives through the years. He experiences many highs and lows. If you appreciate great acting and music, you'll love this film.

VHS : Bastard Out of Carolina
I was born and raised in South Carolina in 1953 but left when I was sixteen years old...so I thought it might be interesting to watch this movie. I was wrong. This movie is really not a pleasant movie to watch. But for the fact that it is supposed to be based on fact, I am not sure I would find watching it of any worthwhile value. It reminded me of the movie, Rosewood. Truth or not, I mean what's the point to making movies of this stuff.

I absolutely love the premise of this movie. A little girl's drawings come to life in her dreams. What happens when she forgets to include something in her drawing? What happens when she adds something? What if she makes someone look too angry in a drawing? Will they be angry in her dreams? What if she needs to erase something to reverse a mistake? Will the drawing let her? Will there be consequences? What a wonderfully original and very clever premise for a movie.

However...

I have to say my husband and I were disappointed. I had read so many reviews of this movie over the years and grew very intrigued to see this film. It resides on many "best ever" lists from top reviewers and it is highly acclaimed by critics and fans. So perhaps I expected too much? I thought it would be scarier and given so many great ... This was somewhat enjoyable, but predictable version of the Sgt Bilko tale. Martin had some very funny moments and played off the other characters well.

Yeah, I know that the critics hated it, and I can sometimes find reasons to agree with their assesments. But, I am mysteriously drawn to this farce. The notion of mixing Renoir, New York City "artworld" sophistication, the "new" South and the old, spiced with as many stereotypical characters as possible takes theatre of absurdity into an uncharted territory. I love how over the top are the characters; how the plot while seemingly a series of unconnected events manages to collect itself, and how the resolution is somewhat surprising.

No S&B is not a great film, maybe not even a good one, but it has the appeal of a cult film that make me want to watch it again to try and figure out what the film maker is trying to tell me. On the way I discover another joke that I have missed, or I laugh again at the familiar ones. I have recommended ... Read More
