I like the movie, and the dvd set is fine, but I prefer to watch movies with the words and the mouth movements in sync. Amazon has sent me two of the two-disc special edition, and they're both out of sync.

Interesting and easy read - Fox has done his research well. My late husband's parents were Kenya settlers and his father had NO respect for the Happy Valley crowd AT ALL. Fox has certainly filled in many of the gaps left in the story my husband, Len Gill told me and has introduced me to a new side of some of the characters Len knew. I only wish I had read this book before my husband died of cancer. So many questions - so little time for answers.

I first saw "Home for the Holidays" when it was released on video in 1995. A small film, lovingly directed by Jodie Foster and blessed with an extraordinary cast, I was stunned by its frenetic charm. To this day I recommend it to friends, most of whom have never heard of it. Equal parts comedy and drama, "Home for the Holidays" covers the Larson family reunion on Thanksgiving day. The oldest daughter Claudia (Holly Hunter) is a single mom just fired from her job at an art gallery in Chicago. While en route to the airport, her teenage daughter (Claire Danes) reveals her plans to have sex for the first time while mom is away.

That's just one of many subplots interwoven into this colorful tapestry, as Claudia lands in Baltimore in the arms of her parents, portrayed by the indelible Charles Durning ... Read More

VHS : Chaplin
In the hands of director Richard Attenborough, Charlie Chaplin's life story becomes a sweeping and touching drama. Robert Downey, Jr. gives an unforgettable performance as Chaplin, who rose from the slums of London to become Hollywood's favorite silent movie character, the Tramp. Along the way, Charlie had to deal with his mother's insanity, his love affairs, marriages, and a paternity scandal, all involving much younger women, and investigation by none other than J. Edgar Hoover.

This very entertaining story vividly recreates the beginnings of the movie industry. The sets and costumes are magnificent, as is the John Barry soundtrack, which features Chaplin's own song, "Smile." Downey gives the performance of a lifetime playing a controversial but ultimately very likeable hero over a span of sixty ... Read More

This is an incredible movie to watch especially as a mother. We watch this movie once a year around Ash Wednesday and I have done this since my kids were 1 and 3 and are now 14 and 16. At one time my younger son was so sad and engrossed with the movie he wanted a "dream catcher" so the thought of the awful things seen as a mother of a child who was tortured so would just go away. I will never forget his true sadness and fear - how the mother of God must have felt! The Schrivers put this film together! Just awesome. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It was good to see the 'boys' in action again. The 'twist' of Athos and Arimis not trusting d'Artagnan was good. Otherwise, most of it was boring. I loved the 3 and 4 Musketeers, the 3 being my favorite.

VHS : Three Musketeers (1974)
This remake of the old black and white film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's « The Three Musketeers » misses the main point of the book, maybe even two main points. It misses the gallant courtly politeness that is nothing but hypocrisy in the mouth of Cardinal Richelieu who appears as a bad loser when he is an elegant plotter who never loses because his short term defeat is a victory in the long run, a victory of the main political objective of his that the film misses completely. In this 17th century, with King Louis XIII, the father of the Sun King Louis XIV, the French state is starting to centralize and to conquer real state power, hence to move out of feudal allegiances that are too vague, loose and easy to betray to build a modern state on. And what is essential in this situation, the autonomy of the Queen from a weak-looking and ... Read More

VHS : Age of Innocence (1993)
Tried to care about this elegant, opulent saga, but this movie just comes off as rather pointless. Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a radiant performance trying to get out from under these overstuffed rooms and overwrought sensibilities, but can't quite manage it.

Her main problem, in my opinion, Daniel Day-Lewis here plainly just doesn't cut it as a leading man. His emasculated, simpering deadpan, dispensing dialogue medicinally as so much cough syrup, completely fails to engage as a romantic figure. Trying to imagine Michelle's ravishing, vivacious character head over heels for him is more than a stretch. I've seen gunfighters with more chemistry than these two. Their first intimate scene, eek! Comes off like an accident on a crowded bus. This mis-casting is quite annoying, as this movie appears in many ways to have had real promise. ... Read More
