Potential buyers should be warned that this is not a DVD version of the made-for-film production that includes Angela Landsbury in the cast, though her name certainly appears on the box cover in the advertisement, the product description, and the reviews. It appears that none of the reviewers actually own a DVD copy of this film, and are therefore commenting on a different production than the one being sold (which I already own). As I remember, the production being sold here has sound issues, and the volume fades in and out. Nonetheless, "Hyacinth Bucket" gives a very strong performance as the foolish nursery maid, and the production has other appealing features to collectors.

How can it be that Walter Matthau's best performance, especially a comedy performance, is not available on DVD? It's a shame, because this is arguably the most brilliant dark comedy from that wonderful golden age of grown-up films from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. This movie is way too funny and brilliant to be this undercover and cult. Elaine May is to comedy what Coppola and Scorsese were to drama. Her writing is as good as comedy writing gets, and her performance gives a glimpse at how wonderful a comic actress she really is. No B.S. either. This one of the great comedies. Can't believe it's not on dvd. Not to be missed. I remember seeing this on tv when I was a little girl and thinking, that is a wonderful world those two people live in. It played the midnight show in college and the crowd loved it ... Read More

VHS : Devil's Disciple (1959)
This is one of my favorite movies. Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas are in thier prime, both sexy and studley. If they really had ministers like Lancaster, I'd never miss church. The story, adapted from a play is a bit stagey, but it's very enjoyable. I liked the black and white photography as well. The best part of this picture is Lawrence Olivier as General Burgoyne. He is just so fantastic. He steals every scene he's in and the wordplay between him and Kirk Douglas is really entertaining.
Also the score is very good. It's a nice movie and I can remember seeing this in the movies with my grandmother when I was 8. It still brings back great memories.

VHS : Ski Patrol
Well this is definitely one of the weirdest snow ski movies I've ever seen. And when I first saw it, I tried to cross-referrence the characters in it compared to the ones in the Police Academy movies. It stars Roger Rose, Yvette Nipar, T.K. Carter, the late Ray Walston, and Martin Mull. Snowy Peaks I believe which is the name of this ski resort is where it takes place, and they are about to be evaluated on their performance, and when Martin Mull finds out about it, he tries to blackball their safety features so they can close down so he can takeover the ski resort and make his own resort, it's up to the ski resort to save it's reputation and keep it open. To me, the funniest part is the guy SUICIDE...the guy with a THREE part personality when he does the snowboard, and rocket skis and a lot of other stunts. ... Read More

VHS : A New Leaf (Special Home Video Version)
This is a gem of a movie featuring the work of two fine actors at their comic best. I also laughed until I cried several times during the film. Matthau plays a man addicted to the very best in life but without the money to support his cravings (fast cars, fine food, quality clothing, fine art). Elaine May is the bumbling heiress/professor who has abundant wealth but no sense of how to manage it or even herself. Matthau, with the help of his faithful and very funny butler, targets her for marriage and then for murder so that he can inherit. The irony is that with marriage comes the dawning understanding that he likes being a responsible individual, and that he actually is quite good at managing his extreme needy, very dependent wife and her estate. May does a wonderful job of playing the absent-minded heiress who is only capable ... Read More

VHS : Batman - The Movie
Well after watching a few of the newer Batman films, I figured it was time to revisit the original Batman Movie from the mid 60's. Both DVD releases are the same, so if your looking to buy this movie, buy the cheapest one!

The film itself looks clean with vibrant colors and clear sound. This is such a fun movie for fans of the series because it has so many Bat-thingys! The word 'camp' should be defined by this film with the entire cast whooping it up to make this a fantastic and entertaining cartoon like movie. The action never stops from the opening with Batman fighting a shark while hanging from a ladder attached to the Bat-copter to the Bat-boat VS Penguin submarine battle finale!

The DVD transfer is excellent and there are many cool extras to keep Bat-fans busy for a while. Both releases have the ... Read More

VHS : Bond: Thunderball
Taking into account inflation, THUNDERBALL is, by far, the biggest grosser in the series. In 2008 dollars the film would have grossed nearly a billion dollars. It has some slow moments but by and large it is a large scale world shaking epic. The threat of nuclear blackmail has a sense of urgency that the remake, NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN, never achieves. Connery gives his most relaxed performance as Bond, Adolfo Celli is meancing as Largo, Claudine Auger stunning as Domino and Luciana Paluzzi as a deadly liason for Bond. Remembered for the underwater battle the film is based on Fleming's novel which inturn was based on a screenplay by himself, Jack Whittingham and Kevin McClory -- the basis for a major lawsuit that has reverberated over the decades and resulting in NSNA in 1983 (releasing the same year as Roger Moore's outing OCTOPUSSY ... 10.Rise & Fall of Legs Diamond starring: Ray Danton, Karen Steele, Elaine Stewart, Jesse White, Simon Oakland

VHS : Rise & Fall of Legs Diamond
Since Little Caesar and Al Capone, gangster films by this time had a plot formula to follow: poor thief follows plan to take over the mob and replace the boss, climbs the ladder to the top only to meet an end of raining bullets. Ray Danton is well cast in the leading part but character actor Jesse White is hard to believe as a tough mafia leader and Elaine Stewart wears almost a disguise to play Arnold Rothstein's tough moll. Good performances help a cliched story, but it's been filmed before too often.
