I FIRST SAW THIS MOVIE IN 1956,
WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. I WAS MESMERIZED.
IT WAS THE GREATEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER
SEEN UP TO WHEN IT WAS RELEASED. SINE
THEN, IT IS STILL THE GREATEST MOVIE
I HAVE EVER SEEN. I WOULD LIKE TO
SEND COPIES TO FAMILY. HOWEVER, I CAN
NOT MAKE COPIES. SO, I HAVE THEM COME
TO MY HOUSE AND WATCH IT. I CONSIDER
IT THE GREATEST MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN.

Even though this isn't a famous film noir, I'd recommend it. The production values were very good. It's a good crime mystery, with a well-developed plot line and a surprise ending. Tension builds as the movie progresses. Edward G. Robinson, Joan Bennett, and Raymond Massey both gave excellent performances. And, yes, the film is very noir.

I first saw this movie years ago on AMC - I'd never heard of it but there wasn't anything else on, so I settled in to watch. After all, with the cast of stars including Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson, I figured it couldn't be too bad. I was wrong - it was GREAT! The story involves a tailcoat which is passed from one story to the next and affects the lives of each person who receives it. Some of the stories were pure 40's fluff and that's okay - I like fluff. But two of the "tales" especially touched my heart - so much so that here I sit, years later, writing a review that I hope will inspire someone else to watch this hidden gem. You'll see other people talk about the vignette with the great Edward G. and I agree - it's absolutely one of ... Read More

Caught "Vines.." (missed the very beginning) on TCM and totally fell in love with it! I tivo'ed it and I can't stop watching this charming and sweet movie. Isn't it wonderful to see loving parents? Isn't it wonderful to see loving children? Its a movie I want to share with my whole family. It would make such a great Christmas present... DVD, anyone?

Another Chuck Heston foray into Sci-Filand, this time a future of global warming and over-population. Based on Harry Harrison's novel "Make Room! Make Room!", Heston stars as Det. Thorn investigating the murder of a prominent member of the Soylent Corporation -- the leading food supplier of the world. It is another the late 1960's early 1970's doom and gloom films -- like THE OMEGA MAN, A BOY AND HIS DOG, SILENT RUNNING, COLOSSUS: THE FORBIN PROJECT, et al. Edward G. Robinson in his last screen performance as Sol Roth -- Thorn's "Book", member of an information exchange. Also starring Joseph Cotton, Rosemary Forsyth and Chuck Conners. Best remembered for Heston's last line (memorably parodied by the late Phil Hartman in an SNL sketch).

Why is this movie out of print ? This is a great movie, fantastic thriller. There is one scene set in a nudists' club. Is that the problem ?
I just can't stand the MPAA. Not sure if it their fault, but it certainly smells like it.

The fourth & final pairing of Bogey & Bacall is a real treat. Also, it's another pairing for Bogey & Eddie G. but this time Bogey got the top billing. This Bogey & Bacall pairing doesn't smolder on screen like the earlier efforts though one would have to be blind not to see anything.

The story mostly takes place at the Largo Hotel on Key Largo. The proprietor is James Temple (Lionel Barrymore) who's been confined to a wheelchair for reasons not specified. He's assisted by his daughter-in-law, Nora Temple (Lauren Bacall). The hotel has been taken over by some gangsters though we don't know who they are until later in the film. Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) arrives on the scene via a bus. McCloud is a world war two veteran who's down on his luck. He's there at the request of Temple who wanted to know more about ... This is a great film with great acting, that holds up better today than it probably did when it was made. American audiences must have been put off by a murderous, rapist lead in Paul Newman's Carrasco. Ritt is a very fine director and in this and other films, works with James Wong Howe, one of the most underated cinematographers of the 50's and 60's. Howe's camerawork is brilliant in this film, but hard to see because MGM/Warner has never released the widescreen version of the film. We are left with a shoddy pan and scan version which only gives us hints of the compositions that Howe marvelously created on the screen. The story holds up well, Ritt does a very admirable job remaking a classic in "Rashomon." Yes, Kurosawa made a better film, but Ritt made a very good film in his own right. Newman is great, Bloom is fantastic and everytime we flash ... Read More

VHS : Sea Wolf (1941)
Edward G. Robinson puts his own brand of cruelty on the role of a freighter captain who tyrannizes his crew and some unexpected passengers (Ida Lupino, John Garfield, Alexander Knox) in this taut, suspenseful psychological melodrama with no shortage of brooding atmosphere.

Based on the famous Jack London story of Wolf Larsen (Robinson), the callous and inhuman skipper of a schooner, who proceeds to make life hell for his crew and his unwilling passengers rescued from a sinking ferryboat. Lupino and Garfield are a couple of losers with a past; Knox is a mild-mannered novelist. The romantic angle between Garfield and Ida is underplayed with the accent more on the brooding tension aboard the schooner.

Under Michael Curtiz' direction, all the performances are first-rate and Erich Wolfgang Korngold's intriguing score helps sustain the ... Read More
