VHS : Miracle of Morgan's Creek
That Preston Sturges managed to get this perversion of the Christmas story past the censors is a miracle all on its own. Betty Hutton's and Eddie Bracken's peculiar talents are a perfect fit for this story about greatness thrust upon an unlikely recipient.

Sturges's crazy combination of really smart banter, simple-minded slapstick and a perfect sense of comic timing works miracles with a great supporting cast: Diana Lynn, William Demarest, Julius Tannen and Porter Hall.

VHS : Summer Stock
"Summer Stock" has always been one of my favorite movies. Because it's the type of old movie that everyone can enjoy. There's singing and dancing and lots of laughs and drama and theatrics. In this picture Miss Judy Garland (may she rest in peace) stars as Jane Falbury, a farmer who reluctantly allows a theater company to stay on at her farm to rehearse for their big performance. I know the story is a little hockey, but does that matter, really?

This is the very first time I ever saw a picture with Mr. Gene Kelly (playing the male lead, Joe Ross) and he was absolutely perfect. Anyone could tell that there was a lot of magic and chemistry between him and Miss Garland because when they were on the screen together it was always amazing to watch.

My favorite part in the movie ... Read More

VHS : Hail the Conquering Hero

Top-notch Preston Sturges comedy about patriotism and small-town politics. Eddie Bracken plays the son of a WW I marine hero who has joined up for WW II with high hopes for glory, only to be discharged for hay fever. Embarrassed to go home to his mother and sweetheart (Ella Rains), he meets six marines in a bar one night (led by William Demerest) and before he knows what hit him, he's on his way home a decorated war hero (thanks to the snow job concocted by Demerest). The town goes ga-ga and ends up electing him mayor. He finally straightens things out at the end, but in the meantime we are treated to some of the best Sturges exploding humor on screen. The entire Sturges stock company is on hand, and especially good are Raymond Walburn as the windbag mayor Bracken defeats, Freddie Steele as a mother-loving ... Read More

VHS : Wind in the Willows (1987)
I adored this film as a child and as an adult I still love it and find myself humming the songs on occasion. I have seen numerous film versions of The Wind in the Willows and this one is something special. (I enjoy the Cosgrove Hall TV series as a TV series but still find this to be the best film adaptation of the original book.) The voices are perfect for the characters and the songs range from humorous to moving. My original copy of this film was taped from TV and even with commercials and severe weather warnings it was watched again and again. I now have the VHS and find I enjoy the humor in the film even more now that I am an adult and can appreciate the quality of this production.

They just don't make animated films like this anymore. It has so much of the Edwardian spirit of the novel and the dignity... ... Read More

VHS : Assault at West Point
These are the kind of true stories that make one's blood boil. The coup performed upon Cadet Johnson Whittaker and the subsequent court marshall is but another blight on the landscape of justice in America. The only Negro cadet in West Point was viciously attacked and left for dead. This action was blamed upon Whittaker as a sham which he had staged in order to gain attention and sympathy for his race. What transpires is the actual trial taken from the 12000 pages recorded over several months. The story is quite compelling, but alas the acting definitely is not.The words from A-list actors such as Samuel L.Jackson and Sam Waterston playing Whittaker's lawyers seem stilted and contrived. The blocking and lack of movement in this film are static and uninspired.John Glover so overacts that his role is somewhat laughable. In fact, all of the actors are charicatures ... I purchased this DVD after re-viewing it on a TV where I work out. This film was essentially unknown to the kids I showed it to (5th graders)since they hadn't been born yet. It was an enjoyable film with lots of humor, and the kids really liked it.

9.Caught in the Draft starring: Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour, Lynne Overman, Eddie Bracken, Clarence Kolb

VHS : Caught in the Draft
Not even Bob Hope, escorted by a raft of fine character actors, can save this poorly written attempt at wartime comedy, as his patented timing has little which which to work. The plot involves a Hollywood film star named Don Bolton (Hope), and his attempt to evade military service at the beginning of World War II, followed by his enlistment by mistake in a confused attempt to court a colonel's daughter (Dorothy Lamour). Bolton's agent, played by Lynne Overman, and his assistant, portrayed by Eddie Bracken, enlist with him and the three are involved in various escapades regarding training exercises, filmed in the Malibu, California, hills. Paramount budgeted handsomely for this effort, employing some of its top specialists, but direction by the usually reliable David Butler was flaccid, and this must be attributed to a missing comedic element in the scenario. ...
