VHS : It's a Wonderful Life
This used to be on television about a hundred times a year until somebody realized that it diminished its value. Now rarely on tv, this dvd is an entertaining, heart-warming story. It only takes a viewing of this movie spectacular to put me right in the mood for Christmas. James Stewart plays George Bailey who has led his entire life giving of himself to help others when a banking error by his uncle could end it all for poor George.

An angel comes to his rescue and shows George what life would have been without him. With the beautiful Donna Reed as his wife and gruff and mean Mr. Potter played by the highly talented Lionel Barrymore, this dvd is a must for any collection, and epecially any library of Christmas classics.

VHS : Green Dolphin Street
"Green Dolphin Street" is one of those cheesefests of Hollywood's Golden Age that has slipped into obscurity. At least "Black Narcissus",the camp classic, has its own Criterion Edition. Why NOT the love triangle set in New Zealand, with its needlessly complicated plot and Lana Turner in her fantastical outfits?

"Green Dolphin Street" is all about two sisters who live on the Channel Islands between England and France. There's the good girl, Marguerite (Donna Reed), and the bad grrrrl Marianne (Lana Turner). They're both enamored of the dull William (Richard Hart) William sets off to China as a trader. After a drunken night, he dashes off a letter to his intended... but he writes "Marianne" instead of "Marguerite." Friends don't let friends drink and write. William realizes his mistake too ... VHS : From Here to Eternity
From Here to Eternity is more than the classic scene of Deborah Kerr and Burt Lancaster rolling around on a beach, covered in ocean waves. It's a story about America during World War II. It's about human beings trying to live normal lives during an abnormal time. Taking place just before the bombing of Pearl Harbor, this is more than a war movie. It's a human story of love, honor, humor, and hope. Anyone who enjoys real-life drama will appreciate this well-written and well-acted story. From Here to Eternity (Superbit Collection)

VHS : Picture of Dorian Gray (1945)
I buy this Dvd because I remembered watching bits of this film many years ago during my childhood and I must say I was greatly surprised with the quality of the film , the magnificent performances (George Sanders shines) and the amazing script which reflects the essence of Oscar Wilde's celebrated novel. I highly recommend this dvd.

Nick Charles is walking in a park, his son in tow. He scans the racing form. Later Nick and Nora travel across a bridge but are stopped for speeding. Police and ambulances rush to the racetrack. A jockey was shot after he was caught cheating. Not as punishment, but to shut his mouth. Lt. Abrams asks Nick Charles for advice. An investigator was looking into a gang who was fixing the races. Nick and Nora go to a wrestling match and get a hot dog. Two heavy wrestlers put on a show. Then a man wants to go away; he asks for a lot of money. A reporter gets the keys to an office. Someone catches him, and they fight. Someone off camera shoots one of these men, and escapes. Lt. Abrams investigates this murder. Nick Charles explains what he deduces from the murder scene, and a laundry list. Was the shooting of that jockey an accident?

I saw this movie a few months ago and parts of it stay with me. I thought it was a nice attempt to summerize the moods, trials, and perspectives of the folks at home during WWII. In attempting such a bold purpose, it takes a few liberties. Unfortunately, those liberties have tended to stay with me longer than the rest of the movie. One of the artistic licenses was a drive through the park on a Sunday afternoon. As our characters drive along, they pass one ethnic group after another; each doing their own cultural "thing" often in their unique cultural dress. The message is meant to be about America welcoming all groups into embrace but it's hard not to notice, from 60 years down the road, how nobody seems to be assimulating and none are interacting with each other.

The other artistic liberty was the portrayal of the idea that ... Read More

VHS : Benny Goodman Story
Well made movie, and probably close to reality than The Glenn Miller Story. Steve Alen looks more like Glenn Miller than he does to Benny Goodman, and he plays Goodman in a rather understated way, at times almost dead, but he was no actor. He was a comedian. Some of the acting in this movie is quite mediocre, and so is the script. But it is a movie for Big Bands buffs, the music is wonderful and so is the depiction of the period. Despite its shortcomings, the movie is quite enjoyable.

That pretty well sums it up. Jack Palance must have been hungry when he got involved in these honkers.
