I think it goes without saying that you shouldn't expect historical accuracy out of Disney. This is a company built on talking mice and mermaids, so I didn't wasn't looking for a history lesson. That aside, this movie wasn't as horrible as most of the direct-to-video sequels. The songs weren't memorable, but they didn't grate on my nerves. And, while I'm no expert, I felt that the animation wasn't bad either. It wasn't on par with the first movie. But it wouldn't have been out of place on a Saturday morning cartoon.

My 3-year-old seemed to have mixed feelings about this one. She loved that Pocahontas danced in a ballgown, just like the other Disney princesses. But there were long stretches of the movie with no action that seemed to bore her.

Pocahontas herself seemed ... Read More

This is one of the saddest, most beautiful movies I've ever seen. John Lynch and Helen Mirren give radiant performances and bring human faces to the struggle that is no-win for everyone. The members of the IRA are shown at once as monsters and victims and neither ever becomes the dominant way to view those who carry on the violence. Mark Knopfler wrote the soundtrack -- it only adds to the poignancy of the film. You can't miss w/ this one.

If you have no appreciation for Beethoven or his music watching this film will undoubtedly change that. Directed with real verve and finely acted by the likes of Gary Oldman, I loved watching this film. I own this movie and drag it out every once in a while. Great recordings of his music by the current masters infuse some scenes with intense emotion: the emotions Beethoven himself must have felt. This is one of the finest period films I have seen, and can only recommend it highly.

And boy does she get smacked around in this one! Plus, she gets naked!! Sort of a thrill-kill flick in a similar vein as Natural Born Killers in a loose way. Although this movie takes place Down Under. Basically, a good rule of thumb is that pretty much any movie Linda Blair appeared in post-1981 stinks, and the higher the billing she has, the stinkier the movie is. She stars in this one, and it was made way after 1981, so that ought to help one figure out how good it is.

Another of my favorites. Wonderful acting and a good story behind it. That is why I buy these movies. I have seen them before and are the ones I want to see again and again.

I thought Wim Wenders was incapable of making a bad film until I saw this. Apparently the idea was conceived by Bono of U2 (who should clearly stick to churning out pop songs). It started out well, with lots of the clever signature devices that come with a Wenders film, and had a promising cast, flagshipped by big names such as Mel Gibson and Tim Roth. However, it quickly went downhill, and before long it became apparent that whatever story lay behind the film had run its course in the first ten minutes. The remainder of the film revolved around the relationship between Tom Tom and Eloise, both of whom were clearly a couple of Lancasters short of a full squadron, and whose efforts to communicate lay in a series of grunts, twitches and slaps. No doubt this was meant to be endearing and heart-warming. In fact ... Read More

Many teachers in today's school systems must feel helpless. Years ago there was the threat of corporal punishment, if not the actual fear of parent retaliation. Now, however, children are spoiled, often without strong male-role models (particularly in the more urban areas), there is simply no respect for authority or desire to contribute meaningfully to society, all parents think their child is a perfect little snowflake, and the outlook for a teacher in a troubled area is particularly bleak and hopeless.

Trevor Garfield (Samuel L. Jackson) is a high school teacher who has recently been reassigned as a substitute in a rough, dilapidated LA school district after suffering a shank attack at the hands of one of his former students. Realizing the corrupt, bereaucratic school administration will never ... Read More
