VHS : Follow the Sun: The Ben Hogan Story
Being a golfer and a fan of the sport for many years, I was very interested in seeing this, which I did when the VHS first came out. Later, I saw it again because of the same reason plus I usually find Glenn Ford's films entertaining.

Well, the story moves well, it didn't bore me, but I did have problems with the accuracy of it and the general theme of the film, telling us that Hogan really was a nice guy who cared lot about what the public thought. From every account I have read, and from a couple of people who met him or knew him, that was not true. The fact is that he was a mean SOB and remained that way most of his life. This movie looks like it was made by his press agent. It's ridiculous and ruins what otherwise is an inspiring story.

No one can deny Hogan's ... Read More

VHS : The Story of Dr. Wassell / Movie
This movie I consider among my favorites. It is a true story of a doctor
who ended up on Java and saved many wounded men who were rejected entrance
into a ship leaving for safety because they could not get up and walk. It is
an amazing story and I am hoping someone will get it transfered to DVD before
it is beyond saving!

Duck Soup (1933) - Leo McCarey

The Marx Brothers are almost totally unique in the history of film, and when I say unique, I'm not even referring to how innovative they are. True, they definitely developed a particular style of comedy that I would say is probably now the dominant form in all of American comedy. How would I characterize it? It's difficult, but it includes a combination of anarchy, irony, and self-awareness. I paraphrase Roger Ebert when he states that you can clearly see what the Marx Bros. influenced, but its difficult to see what influenced them, other than the rich tradition of music hall.

However, again, when I say that they are totally unique, I'm referring to something else. If one notices carefully at all the groups and individuals that the ... Read More

VHS : The Miracle Woman (Restored)
That's Barbara Stanwyck, very young & desirable in this 1931 forgotten little movie that I understand costs quite bit for its day. She's the daughter of a preacher who has just been fired & immediately dies. She gives the hypocrites in the congregation a firery sermon in his place. She leaves town, vowing vengence with a shady manager in tow. Soon she is famous & wealthy as Florence "Faith" Fallon an evagelist & healer. She has become what she had cursed the congregation for. She's knows she's a phony. But then she has a success of sorts. A young avaitor, (David Manners) blinded by the war, is despondent & on the verge of suicide. He hears her broadcast & doesn't follow through. He seeks her out & they develop a friendship. In a series of meetings, mostly in his apartment, ... Read More

VHS : Devil Dogs of the Air
With a light-hearted look at interim period Marine Corps aviation training, this action-filled romance-comedy features a hyper-kinetic Tommy O'Toole (James Cagney) taking on a temperate but firm Lt. Bill Brannigan (Pat O'Brien). It's wit against wit, both in the air and in the local, family-owned cafe where sultry Betty Roberts (Margaret Lindsay) is a waitress who must decide whether to continue her warmish courtship with Brannigan or yield to the arrogant antics of O'Toole who, newly arrived, sets his romantic sights on her - immediately after crashing his ingeniously-shot stunt plane.

The air shots are marvelous and spectacular. The war games provide an informative view of early Navy-Marine Corps joint exercise doctrine. And for aviation enthusiasts, the star aircraft - the Boeing F4B Marine Corps ... Read More

VHS : Astair & Rogers Top Hat
With the nation in the midst of economic ruin, who were better at lifting our spirits and making us smile? Why, Fred and Ginger, of course. I've got a feeling we'd better start watching their old movies again.

Is Top Hat better than Swing Time? People have been staking out their positions for years. Me, I think both represent the height of the Astaire-Rogers magic, all wrapped up in some of the greatest songs ever written for Hollywood movies and with incomparable choreography and dancing. So I just flip a coin to decide...but I make sure I always use the coin with a head on each side.

The story in Top Hat is inconsequential. It's all about Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) an American dancing star in London who meets Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers), the girl who charms him. It's love at first sight for ... Read More
