Terrific movie with another fine performance from Vincent Price. Also an early appearance of Charles Bronson is an added treat.

VHS : Great Santini
Two films were released in 1979, "Apocalypse Now" and "The Great Santini," wherein Robert Duvall played essentially the same character -- a gung-ho, half-crazed Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps.

In "The Great Santini" Duvall plays fighter pilot commander Bull Meechum, who drives his family to his new base in Beaufort, SC (where the film was actually filmed). It's peace-time in the early 60s before the Vietnam War. Bull is ultra-charismatic but flawed. At any given time you either love him or hate him; you'll see this same struggle with his family members. He generally treats them like Marine subordinates which, for the most part, works and they seem to have a lot of good times together, but there's a darkside as Bull is overly competitive, especially with his just-turning ... VHS : Substitute (1993)
I love the original SUBSTITUTE pictures with Tom Berenger and even all the lousy sequels. So I was prepared to pout when this one popped on my TV, thinking, I wonder if they are now going to have a female version of Tom Berenger? But no, this movie is cut from different cloth. It's still great. Watching it you feel like you've stumbled into some sort of previously unknown Brian De Palma movie. And Amanda Donohue, who never really impressed m,e before, save in her fearlessness in taking off her clothes for Ken Russell movies, is really wonderful in the part of Gayle Richardson, an ordinary school teacher in Albany (upstate New York) whose life goes topsy-turvy on her 10th wedding anniversary, when she discovers a strip of film in the breast pocket of her husband's blue sports jacket. Four ... Read More

These two films are both frequently over-looked by people who only remember the David Cronenberg version from the 1980's.

Firstly let me say right from the start that I enjoyed both these films, regardless of any reservations I may have about them. They are good quality horror films of the 1950's. Overall I rate the first film slightly higher than the second one, because its in colour and mainly because the first film has a much better ending than the second, which is a little too Hollywood for my liking.

For their time both films are actually pretty scary. In fact the 2nd film has one classic scene where regardless of the fact that you know what is going to happen, when it does it still makes you jump. By todays standards the special effects are primitive, but I was ... Read More

Peter Lorre's ,"The Black Cat",is charmingly done.Yet,the other two are stinkers.I'm a Corman fan,but this was boring and silly to watch.I think they had a good idea ,bringing the trilogy it to the big screen. But,this version and interpretation of Poe's masterpieces didn't translate well at all.So ,beware of the dog!
