VHS : Tribes
Tribes is certainly a period piece of 1970 with a strong liberal anti-establishment point of view. Today it seems dated and blase`, yet it still has a magnetic attraction to viewers whether veterans, active duty military, or civilians.

From a technical standpoint, there were some flaws (which seems inevitable in any hollywood production dealing with the military) and many ommissions about USMC boot camp (what happened to the long humps with helmet, flak jacket and packs, field exercises, bivuacking, etc?), but overall they got the flavor of boot camp correct. As a former US Marine Commissioned Officer, I never attended MCRD San Diego (I attended OCS Quantico, VA), but as an airline pilot I have flown into Lindbergh Field, San Diego, CA on many occasions and have seen the grinder, PT ... My uncle of all people was the one that recommended this movie to me. At first I was skeptical but I rented it and loved it! Usually this type of movie is considered a "chick flick" but I think this particular movie caters to both men and women. It is a very romantic and tastefully done movie. I recently purchased the movie and sent it to my uncle as a "thank you" gift and he couldn't be happier.

My favorite Billy Zane movie. Excellent offbeat, off color independent film that made fun of independent films by cramming as many independent film stereotypes and cliches into the movie as possible without being too obvious. loved the movie. I still don't understand why this hasn't made it to DVD when every day there are more and more sub par movies make the DVD jump and this one (that so richly deserves it) hasn't made the jump to DVD.
On a side not Don Adams the Nude Bomb (get smart movie) is another movie that should be on DVD but isn't yet.

VHS : Court Martial of Billy Mitchell
An entertaining and well-made film with good acting especially Rod Steiger's performance. The ARTISAN DVD is below average; the 2.35:1 CinemaScope is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, the color is just OK, the picture is not quite sharp, and there is some background noise.

9.Airport '77 starring: Jack Lemmon, Lee Grant, Joseph Cotten, Olivia de Havilland, Brenda Vaccaro

VHS : Airport '77
In this installemnt, a 747 is taken over by would-be art thieves (who are assisted by the co-pilot) andultimately crash in the Bermuda Triangle. Fortunately for the passengers, the plane lands on a sandbar in relatively shallow water. Tensions raise and eventually the Navy comes to the rescue, but not before we get the usual 1970's drama of watching people come unglued.

There is a good bunch of characters, including three guys who intend to be drunk the entire flight, the nun who plays guitar, the old lady with a taste for boilermakers, and of course the bad guys. Some, well most, of the acting is mediocre though there once again is a surprizing number of big name stars (Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Stewart, George Kennedy, etc.) who for whatever reason became part of the cast.
