"October 1918" is the date for this story. German soldiers are planting explosives to destroy the advancing British soldiers when they occupy a French city. The townspeople hurriedly evacuate the town. The British are warned, they will not march into town. Instead Private Plumpick [some pun?] will be sent in to scout the town and defuse the bombs - by himself! [Believable?] Discovered by the Germans, he flees into a building for refuge and safety; it is the local insane asylum. The result of the German withdrawal is the inmates can wander freely into the deserted town and select new clothes from the abandoned homes. [This slow-paced action doesn't seem too funny to me.] Comedy is in part cultural, and attitudes change. Perhaps the humor is in suggesting the clothes make the man or woman? Or ... Read More

Surprise - it has nothing to do with birds!

This video explores Owen and Rose's family on three (four? Many?) levels.

Firstly, what a profound affect coming out can have, making me wonder whether it should be such an imperative. Sometimes keeping a secret might be the better choice.

Secondly, how difficult it is to lead a double life, being homosexual or bisexual in a straight marriage and how easily this fragile set-up can break apart.

Time Life conducted a survey in the 1980's that estimated that only between 2% and 3% of people are truly homosexual. The surprise conclusion was that about 32% of all people are bisexual, suggesting that there are many, many people out there who have to juggle this lifestyle very, VERY carefully.

This comic masterpiece was as big a riot for me as it was in my first viewing some 7 years prior, and it does indeed recall the satire of Moliere. However, this time I started to find the cruelty in the premise gnawing a bit at my conscience. Perhaps it was the chance in a second viewing to study the characters more than the plot, whereby Monsieur Pignon appeared too affectionate and likeable to ridicule for sport. I might have even tweaked the ending to inflict the final comeuppance on Pierre with NO help from Pignon. Then I slapped myself in the face with a reminder that THIS IS AFTERALL JUST A FARCE, with Pignon in the end no less a fool than, say, Stan of "Laurel & Hardy" or Norton of "The Honeymooners". And no less so than previously, I found myself getting caught up in the sequence of comic ... Read More

Honoree de Balzac's novels are known for their callous and cool characters of 19th Century France.Anne Chabert has moved on and remarried now that her Colonel/husband has been dead these past ten years.Enter The Colonel, ready to reclaim his name, his wife, his fortune only to be shunned and blocked at all turns.Fanny Ardent and Gerard Depardieu are no strangers to the acting in adaptations of Balzac's works. They succeed on all levels as two of the best French actors ever to grace the screen. The excellent companion film to COLONEL CHABERT would be BALZAC,again featuring Ardent and Depardieu,as well as COUSIN BETTE, another Balzac adaptation.THE RETURN OF MARTIN GUERRE(also starring Depardieu) and it's American remake SOMMERSBY also contain the similar themes of lost identity.

One of those French directors who can seemingly turn his hand to any subject, Alain Resnais has made everything from the hauntingly enigmatic 'Last Year At Marienbad' to gangster flick 'Stavisky'. He's toyed with making partial musicals twice before with 'On Connait La Chanon' and 'Life Is A Bed Of Roses', but here he turns out the real deal, with a charming romantic comedy sung and performed by the cream of France's actors. Although filled with perky songs, it's a traditional chamber piece played out in quite claustrophobic interiors. If you enjoyed '8 Women', you'll probably love it.

VHS : The Lovers on the Bridge
I found this early work of Juliet Binoche to be both intriguing, very credible but a bit over the top. This is a reluctant love story to say the least but the selection of three odd bods as characters to highlight the problems of homelessness in modern urban societies is a very real device indeed.

Viewers may wish to watch this in conjunction with Subway, to gain a little different perspective. I think that the thematic element of art which ties all three together acts to expose the commonly held view of what constitutes art to the test. These disparate group of artists suffer much for their artbut because there is not the popular acclaim they are consigned to the dustbin of history.

What I find particularly interesting is the development of the character of the fireater who performs to free public acclaim ... Read More
