VHS : Laura (1944)
For the most part, this is a good film: well-written, well-photographed, well-directed and well-acted. But for me, Gene Tierney simply does not have the beauty or strength or charisma that the part of Laura seems to call for. She's certainly pretty, but not beautiful or striking. She's competent, but I wouldn't call her brilliant. I'm told that she is all these things but I really can't see it for myself. I can't, in my own imagination, see her walking into a room and turning everyone's head around, making men "desirous" or women "envious". An actress like Katherine Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman (obviously without any accent) or Lauren Bacall would have fit the part more convincingly.

LOVE this movie. Depicts male menopause to a T (no offense to the men-folk here, my dh loves it, too.) It's very well done, builds tension well, and has many interesting characters.

Well as a former US Army Tanker, I am writing this from that view. I had the privilege of serving with good soldiers, who on one occassion watched this movie together, as a company. The critisicm never ended.
I do like the actors in this movie, but the background, tactics and overall unit organizations shown in this picture, were pitiful. I can understand the equipment that had to be used to film this picture, but the dialogue could of been much more based on military reality. I feel that all the sides protrayed in this picture were not done proper justice. They were protrayed as a bunch of amatuers, fighting a war, like hollywood amatuers playing at war. This picture was put together like a bunch of pix up stix, that were put up half way and forgotten.

VHS : In Harm's Way
A classic match up of John Wayne, Kirk Douglas with a five star supporting cast. This, and the action a suspence of the early days of World War Two, make it unforgetable.

I always loved this movie. It is so heart wrenching and touching. It is worth watching over and over. This is the movie that made me fall in love with Dana Andrews.

It was in very good condition.

VHS : Satan Bug
The Satan Bug is an uncharacteristic Alistair Maclean movie in that ,unlike his biggest box office pictures, it is not a straightforward slice of heroics but a more nuanced espionage slanted movie with some moral ambivalence to it .It seems Maclean reciognised this too for he authored the book pseudonymously -as Ian Stuart.

The Satan Bug is a deadly virus developed by the US government in a secret research facility in the desert.Flasks housing samples of the virus are stolen and threats issued to unleash the plague on the US .Lee Barrett a government investigator (George Maharis)is called in to lead the investigation .He is aided by Ann(Anne Francis)the daughter of the presiding general in the case (Dana Andrews).Among the suspects is Doctor Hoffman (Richard Basehart)the scientist who has been the prime ... VHS : Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
Many viewers of this great American movie -- it won seven Oscars, including Best Picture, for 1946 -- are unaware that it was based on a most unusual book-length narrative poem by MacKinlay Kantor, "Glory for Me," published in 1945.

In 1970, I was a lieutenant working at the Air Force Historical Research Center. The older historians told a word-of-mouth story how the book and the movie came to be. No doubt the story had been embroidered over many years of retelling, but here's the way I heard it.

In 1944, movie titan Samuel Goldwyn knew that whether the allied victory in World War II would come sooner, or later, millions of American veterans would return home. Many -- especially those with physical and psychological wounds -- would have trouble finding jobs and "readjusting."

Goldwyn knew ... Read More

VHS : Airport 1975
This sequel to the original "Airport" is much better written and acted. Unlike the first "Airport" this film actually has suspense and a plot. A small place crashes into a 747 (right into the cockpit, wouldn't you know) and either kills or severely injures the flight crew. A stewardess is left to bring the jumbo jet safely back to earth.

Charlton Heston gives a pretty good performance as the boyfriend of the pilot/stewardess and other cast members like George Kennedy (how did he get so lucky to be in all of these movies?) and Karen Black portray believeable, if not a bit predictable, characters. I will say the guys in the Salt Lake City air traffic control tower leave a lot to be desired, but they are the weakest of the film's cast.

In the end all is well and things work out. While this is not a great movie, it is far superior ... Read More

I saw this movie back when it first came out back then. It's a little quaint by today's standards. However, Elephant Walk, The Naked Jungle, Foxes of Harrow, Blood on the Moon, etc., etc. where post-WWII films made back in the days of innocense and great filming and action. The days of big bands and great films are gone, and pretty soon I will follow. Thanks. George W. Barclay Jr.
