VHS : Lord Jim
Joseph Conrad's novel is a classic and Richard Brooks made a first-rate film version, with a great cast headed by Peter O'Toole in the early years of his career. Filmed in Super Panavasion 70 on locations in South East Asia, the film looks breathtaking in this excellent DVD transfer that has been remastered in high definition. Jack Hawkins narrates as well as appears (sadly, after he had had operations for throat cancer so his rich voice has lost some of its magic) and just when you think the story is reaching a conclusion, James Mason turns up for another chapter. Bronislau Kaper's music score is one of the greats (also including lots of Asian gamelan instruments) and decades ago was a collector's item LP. This anamorphic transfer recreates the visual impact of the film's initial theatrical release ... Read More

The TV picture was awesome. Lots of action with great action. What also really impressed me was the sound, If you are a World War II movie fan, then this is a must addition to your library.
I purchased this picture as a gift for my son who lives and works in Thailand. I was concerned that it wouldn't play on his Play Station 3 Japanese unit. FYI it worked just fine.

We saw them perform in October, great show. They wanted $40 for this dvd at the show, more than I wanted to pay. Good story, didn't see any video problems noted in other reviews. Good buy for the price.

VHS : Bond: Spy Who Loved Me
Of all the Bonds this is the most curiously overrated. While the later Moores are rightly regard as weak -- this one has its share of passionate defenders. I'm not really sure why. Though entertaining, it's slick and frankly a little shallow. It makes the prior two in the series seem positively naturalistic by comparison. Marvin Hamlish's self-conscious, obnoxious musical pastiches are dreadful -- they take you right out of the movie. Barbara Bach is robotic in what could have been an effective female lead. (I hate to say all this as Sir Roger in his charming commentary track says this is his favorite and I'm grateful that he recorded these.)

VHS : Enemy Below
A lot of World War II movies show how it was for U.S. Subs during that War. The Enemy Below reverses the normal and gives a look at the enemy in a sub being chased by an American Ship. It isn't the expected outcome but the action is good and the acting superb! It's a great movie.

VHS : Ferry to Hong Kong
Orson Welles plays a role in this movie that is different from any I've seen him in before. As the proper English Captain Hart who ferries the boat to Hong Kong, he is continually pestered by an obnoxious drunk who lives on the boat, because without his papers, he is not allowed to land anywhere. The drunk, Conrad, constantly creates havoc among the passengers, and Hart continually tries to get rid of him, but when storm and pirates threaten the safety of the boat and the passengers, the two join forces, and the drunk manages to gain some respect for his efforts.

Some of the acting seemed somewhat stereotypical, especially the brutish Chinese pirate, a big, dumb, mean hulk who grunts choppy English. His role was a little laughable to me, as well as the pretty young woman with the group of Chinese children ... Read More

This was a very good movie, although, as usually found-- it doesn't quite go along with the "original" version-- or what actually happened. Even so, it's a good movie and inspiring for people of all ages.
