VHS : Beautiful Dreamers
Who, apart from some psychologists and health care providers even know who Richard Maurice Bucke is????

Well, thank God that there are some film directors that eschew big time glitz to bring a work of pure art and labour of love to the screen. BEAUTIFUL DREAMERS is the based-on-fact story of Maurice Bucke, whose enduring friendship with famed poet Walt Whitman influenced him greatly in the field of progressive health care. Bucke believed that humane contact and a normalization of routines in mental asylums was absolutely necessary to the rehabilitation and care of the unfortunate.Bucke is often recognized as "the father of occupational therapy". Bucke was an avid reader of poetry and read Whitman's banned (in Canada) LEAVES OF GRASS which lead him to meeting the famed ... Read More

VHS : Liberty - The American Revolution
Liberty: The American Revolution has great depth of information, but it's a little too much for junior high age students. Unfortunately we bought the DVD from Fot Records who will not allow returns if the package has been opened without penalizing the buyer a hefty 80%!

We are a school library, and we must preview every DVD we buy before we show it to our students. When we realized the DVD was inappropriate for our age group, we returned it to Fot Records only to find out that we were receiving only $8.99 of our original $44.98 because we had opened the package! Essentially we have paid $41.17, including shipping, for a video we RETURNED! We could have just kept the DVD and given it to the high school if we had known in advance of Fot Record's extremely unfair practices.

I selflessly gave my beloved copy of the DVD to my son, who is a pianist and who loves this movie. I sure do wish I could replace it.

Glenn Gould was an amazing technical pianist, and a fascinating eccentric.

VHS : Night Falls on Manhattan
Like all other films directed by Sidney Lumet, this is a solid, no-nonsense, intelligent police drama. In my opinion, Andy Garcia exhibits one of his finest performances in this film. Unfortunately, the 1.85:1 widescreen DVD is not enhanced for 16:9 TVs, although the picture and sound are of high quality.

6.City of Angels starring: Nicolas Cage, Meg Ryan, Andre Braugher, Dennis Franz, Colm Feore

VHS : City of Angels
WOW! Such a powerful movie! It is by FAR one of the best movies p.e.r.i.o.d. The chemistry was amazing, not to mention the acting, but of course when you have two phenomenal actors as Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan, your bound to have an excellent movie. City of Angels is no exception!
Cage plays Seth who is an angel that comes to collect the dieing, Ryan plays Maggie a heart surgeon...without telling you all the good parts Seth shows himself to Maggie and he ends up trading immortality to be with her.
Funny, heartwarming, and an all around great movie!

VHS : Truman
This is a great movie about a great president of the United States. My husband and I both enjoyed watching a replay of history that we had lived through. President Truman rates at the top of the list of best presidents with us.

VHS : Stephen King's Storm of the Century
For me, there's a definite irony attached to this project, as far as King is concerned. Most of his novels have not been very well adapted to the big screen (or small screen) during his long career. This likely has more to do with those who try to direct, produce, and adapt King's work than with the source-work itself. Even "Carrie," "Misery," and Kubrick's "The Shining" (the best adaptations of his material, so far) were not quite as good as the books. As a longtime King admirer, it's been a bit of a frustration to see film-versions of his work consistently fail to dazzle.

With 'Storm of the Century,' however, we have a story from the mind of King that is extremely effective and resonant onscreen...BUT HE DIDN'T WRITE IT IN NOVEL-FORM! Hence the irony. This is one bit of King's imagination I would love to have seen ... Read More

Looking for a dumb movie with a lot of dumb and a side helping of dumb, look no further. A sad offering from Mr. Lawrence, an actor/comedian who has done so much better.
