Ignore the other reviews. My kids, 7 and 4 watched this video in our car dvd player. They became very upset when, in the first several minutes of the movie, one child explains to another child:
1. There is NO Santa Clause
2. How could Santa go down all the chimney's in the world in 1 night, it's not logical
3. There also is NO GOD
4. And NO HEAVEN

This becomes especially upsetting in the movie because the child who is being told this, sadly exclaims, "this(no heaven)can't be true because what about my mom?" (Her mom is dead and the child had previously thought her mom was in Heaven.) This sad, upset child then tells the other child, "You are not my friend anymore."

At this point, I ejected the movie from the DVD player. My kids were ... Read More

The transfer of this film appears to be the same MPEG transfer as the one used for the DVD version. It DOES NOT appear to be a new 1080p 4k re-mastering of the film. This is not to say that it doesn't look much better in Blu-Ray than it does on DVD. But it is not, evidently, a brand new 1080p 4k transfer made expressly for Blu-Ray release. This can cause some problems, depending on your display system and settings. You may have to select a different input palette or profile on your display, or adjust your settings.

If your system is setup to show Blu-Ray films using the "Cinema" and "Movie" profile of your display, which assumes a low contrast, subdued display of a wide range source that takes full advantage of the display's capabilities, then this film may look washed out, have milky ... Read More

VHS : The Mouse and His Child
How to rate "A Mouse and His Child"? I first became aware of this film in the late 1970s, and actually took a female date to it. Imagine, taking a date to an animated film! It didn't pan out date-wise, but the film was and is astounding ... philosophically astute, almost heart-breaking, keen in its analysis of search and redemption, familial, paternal, and more. It's a commentary on unfettered capitalism, individualism, friendship, internecine (and inter-species) warfare and prejudice. And friendship.

Plot: A "mouse" (father) and "child" (son) are the two parts of a single small wind-up toy, which must be wound up by means of a key in the father's back. After having been unboxed, they discover themselves in a toy shop where they befriend a toy elephant and toy seal. ("Papa, where are we? ... Read More

VHS : The Iron Giant
Perhaps in part due to the fact that the film bombed at the box office, The Iron Giant has developed quite a cult around it in recent years. Some of the enthusiasm is justified--the animation is quite impressive and the story appealing--but the movie does not work as well as its defenders would have one believe.

The biggest problem with The Iron Giant lies with the fact that the entire movie feels like a less-witty animated remake of E.T. Think about it--lonely boy from a fatherless home stumbles upon a sweet and gentle creature from another world and bonds with the strange being, ultimately facing off against government agents who want the creature for their own purposes. While obviously some details differ, the movie has the feel of something we've seen before. Additionally, though ... Read More
