VHS : Hustler
I got this for our "movie night" group the week after Newman's death in lieu of a Woody Allen pick that was originnaly on the schedule. It was very fitting; and we had all forgotten what a great film this really is.

Gleason is superb (even with the limited screen time), George C. Scott very much holds the plot together, and Newman plays the pathetic hero so very well.

"Let's play pool, Fat Man..."

2.Marat Sade starring: Patrick Magee, Clifford Rose, Glenda Jackson, Ian Richardson, Michael Williams

VHS : Marat Sade
You ever watch a movie that just sends chills up and down your body from beginning to end? You ever watch a movie that cements itself in your subconscious and pulverizes you with its magnetism over and over, until you just cannot take it any more? You ever watch a movie that is so rich and so disturbingly authentic that you feel compelled to laud it above all others?

This is that movie.

From the opening credits until the closing ones, `Marat/Sade' is one of the most engaging and utterly phenomenal pieces of art I have ever witnessed. It is mind shattering in its delivery, coupling some of the most intriguing and utterly brilliant performances with one of the most compelling concepts ever put to film. This is a masterclass film, one that gets everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) ... Read More

VHS : Elizabeth R
Glenda Jackson gives the performance of her life as the Virgin Queen. Far superior than any big screen treatment devoted to the life of Elizabeth I, this excellent British mini-series is at once historically accurate and highly entertaining. Costumes are spectacular and sets authentic-looking, but it is the superb writing (much of it culled from the historical record) and inspired acting that conspire to bring the past vividly to life. The Tudor Court supplies an endless stream of plot-twists: factions, rebellions, rivalries, tortures, beheadings, murders, suicides, romances, diplomacy, treachery, war--you name it. An hour and a half in length, each episode is a movie unto itself. My one complaint is that the French are caricatured, and Catholics are portrayed as effeminate, mad, or downright evil.

7.A Married Man starring: Anthony Hopkins, Ciaran Madden, Yvonne Coulette, John Le Mesurier, Alexander Scrivenor

VHS : A Married Man
I first saw this program about 15 years ago, have seen it several times since, and still regard it as one of my favorite mysteries. I believe this movie was made for British TV and it has the flavor of the PBS "Mystery" series offerings. It features a young Anthony Hopkins playing a upper middle class London barrister who is just approaching middle age, beginning to tire of his career -- and his wife. The wife is equally dissatisfied with her own life. The mystery proceeds from there. Very highly recommended for fans of British mysteries and detective programs (Prime Suspect, Touching Evil, Second Sight, Forgotten, etc.)

The 1987 UK film THE GOOD FATHER'S cast and crew reads like a who's who of British Cinema creme de la creme: Mike Newell directed (HARRY POTTER GOBLET OF FIRE,MONA LISA SMILE,AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE);Christopher Hampton screenplay (Oscar for DANGEROUS LIAISONS,QUIET AMERICAN,TOTAL ECLIPSE) and actors such as Anthony Hopkins,Jim Broadbent,Simon Callow,Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry.BIG NAMES...but a small an independent film that looks at the complex emotions of couples breaking up and the bitter wars that develop over the children. This is NOT a simple, straightforward story;it is full of very complex emotionally charged material that does not try to give easy answers to these issues;instead Christopher Hampton is willing to simply let the "chips fall where they may" and let "the doodoo hit the fan" in order to show that divorce ...
