This warm and funny account of a newly married couple trying to make a go of it on a backwoods chicken farm, based on Betty MacDonald's popular best seller, was a big hit with audiences during the 1940's and has lost none of its appeal today. This is a great film the entire family can watch together. Chester Erskine produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Fred F. Finklehoffe in this hilarious and heartwarming film all will enjoy.

Claudettle Colbert is wonderful as the shocked but game Betty when on her honeymoon her husband Bob (Fred MacMurray) informs her he has quit his brokerage house job and bought a chicken farm in the country. She figures things could be worse, and they are, as their farm is a ramshackle old place that fights back! After all, there's not another ... Read More

What to say about a movie like this? Claudette Colbert is adorable. Clark Gable is at his alpha-male finest. Frank Capra used his tried and true formula with humor to make one of the best romantic comedies of the 1930's.

A rebellious rich girl, Ellie Andrews (Colbert), runs away from her rich father because of his opposition to her marriage to King Westley, not a monarch but an upper class snob that her father loathes. Who should she run into on a bus while fleeing than none other than a brash just-fired reporter named Peter Warne, played by Gable. Let the war games begin as Colbert and Gable engage in the sophisticated and very funny running banter that makes the movie so appealing.

Her flight via the bus, and other forms of travel, is the vehicle for moving the couple ... Read More

This movie is 60's classic. I notice the last post on this forum was in 2000! Here it is 2008 and still no DVD! I agree with the majority of reviewers that the junk that is out on DVD is just that...junk. We don't want these classics to be forgotten. Copy it to DVD before the next iteration of technology emerges.

So, I'm reading these reviews, and it seems that a lot of people like to talk about things that they DO NOT know about. First, I would like to say that this is a good movie. It would never be one of my favorites, but it definitely was well made. So now that that's out of the way....I would never say that the character of Delilah is "understandable for those times" as if her portrayal was realistic. However, her portrayal as a "mammy" is understandable because most portrayals of African Americans in early film had to do with the five basic character types(mammy, tom, coon, buck, and mulatto). Realistically, if you were living through the Great Depression would you give complete ownership of a recipe to someone else who will make millions off of it? I just think it's funny that people find Delilah to be a believeable ... Read More

A wealthy American playboy (Gary Cooper) goes into a shop to buy some pajamas and leaves enchanted by the woman he will soon marry (Claudette Colbert). He blatantly pursues her only to find that she isn't interested in him. He begins to win over her father (Edward Everett Horton), buying a Louis XV bathtub that resembles a washbasin, a contraption that he has absolutely no use for. Through stubborness and charm, he finally wins her over. At the wedding, he casually breaks that news that he has been married before- seven times. She feels duped and decides that they will live in a business partnership with no emotions whatsoever. He does his best to seduce her with wine, good food, and soft lighting, but she also has tricks up her sleeve.

A fun movie with a good cast, Bluebeard's Eighth Wife has many plot ... Read More

My parents told me about this classic. I enjoyed it a great deal; however, I would like to know if it comes in DVD format. Usually when I order movies I don't check if it is in VHS or DVD and have always received DVD -- so I never thought to check it. Please advise, because I'd like to order one for my parents. Thank you.

I purchased this edition of the movie specifically because it included an audio commentary about the movie. This movie is one of John Ford's and Henry Fonda's best. Unfortunately I found the audio commentary to be inconsistent. It was at its' best when addressing movie history but lacking when both addressing the history of the times and when exploring the commentators' own views of history.

I will not address the movie itself because many of the commentators have already done so. I agree with those who think this is an amazing picture with John Ford, Henry Fonda, Claudette Colbert as well as the supporting cast at their best. I have seen this movie five times and will be watching it again.

This movie is based on a historical novel and takes place in the Mohawk Valley during the Revolutionary war. It ... Read More

Brutal, dramatic and poignant film that recreates the events after the painful destruction of Rome by Nero's caprice: Marcus is the loyal officer who falls in love with a very young and beaty Christian; but in the meantime Poppea is in love with him, and due that reason she will send to death the woman he loves.

Claudette Colbert as Nero' wife is alluring and seductive: Frederic March as Marcus is believe believable too, but Charles Laughton as Nero simply is I top form.

Sometimes uneven and sometimes taut; but despite of the facts, the script maintains its force all the way through.

A film worth to see it.
