VHS : Canterville Ghost (1944)
I saw this black & white movie Canterville Ghost(1944) years ago. The cowardly ghost was funny. I was excited to find it on Amazon. The ghost tries to scare the guest instead they scare the cowardly ghost. Once again I enjoyed watching it but it wasn't as funny as I remembered. I also purchased the newer version in color of Canterville Ghost(1986)staring John Gielgud, Ted Wass, Andrea Marcovicci, and Alyssa Milano. This Canterville ghost wants the new owners out and is very mischief. We enjoyed both movies.

VHS : Tales of Manhattan
I first saw this movie years ago on AMC - I'd never heard of it but there wasn't anything else on, so I settled in to watch. After all, with the cast of stars including Rita Hayworth, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda, Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson, I figured it couldn't be too bad. I was wrong - it was GREAT! The story involves a tailcoat which is passed from one story to the next and affects the lives of each person who receives it. Some of the stories were pure 40's fluff and that's okay - I like fluff. But two of the "tales" especially touched my heart - so much so that here I sit, years later, writing a review that I hope will inspire someone else to watch this hidden gem. You'll see other people talk about the vignette with the great Edward G. and I agree - it's absolutely one of ... Read More

VHS : Island of Lost Souls
This was released a year before the production code went into enforcement, and it shows! There are things and suggestions of things here that the filmmakers would never have gotten away with once the Breen Office began imposing its iron fist on Hollywood. H.G. Welles, who wrote the novel on which it was based, was reportedly disgusted by it, but this is still one of the very best fantasy pictures of the early sound era, easily standing alongside 'King Kong' and Whale's 'The Bride of Frankenstein' as the very cream of the crop.

That it is still unavailable on DVD is a crime.

After more than 70 years this remains an exciting and involving picture with a number of unexpectedly poetic moments. The atmospheric camera work by Karl Struss is pretty sophisticated for the time, the art direction ... Read More

VHS : Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934)
This beautiful production from the early 1930's of a dark shadow hanging over the promise of glorious love and happiness is perhaps Norma Shearer's lovliest performance. The romance between poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett was filmed with a class and meticulous care only MGM could muster. Under Sidney Franklin's direction, William Daniels' photography, and the period flourish provided by Cedric Gibbons, this became one of the greatest romantic dramas ever to be filmed.

Shearer loses her modern slinky charm and projects a luminous class as Elizabeth Barrett, a shining soul living with illness in a house strangled of love by her cruel and repressed father, played to horrible perfection by Charles Laughton. Her lifeline is her continuing correspondence with fellow poet Robert Browning. He has ... Read More

VHS : Hobson's Choice
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he plans to keep it that way. Maggie runs the store, keeps ... Read More

VHS : Young Bess
I own this on VHS and am looking forward to when it's translated to DVD. I enjoy this 1953 film for its sets, costuming, and Technicolor treatment, but I can't say the same for Jean Simmons in the title role. She takes a valiant shot at portraying the temperamental Bess, but she just isn't convincing, maybe because she's too old for the part and she's trying too hard to make the rest of us believe that she isn't. I also don't care for Stewart Granger's performance as Thomas Seymour. It too is unconvincing because Granger plays him as a cheerful, romantic bon vivant while the real Seymour was a swaggering, hot-headed schemer who plotted to seize power from his older brother who was Lord Protector of England during the first half of Edward VI's reign. Rex Thompson, who plays Edward, does a cute job, but the real-life boy king was ... Read More

VHS : Salome
Salome is not a movie that sticks close to the Biblical account of the story .The script by Harry Kleiner ,based on a story concocted by Jesse Lasky Junior ,embroiders the Biblical tale and makes a great many changes,,in particular by absolving Salome of all blame for the fate of John the Baptist ,the guilt for which is laid squarely at the feet of her mother,Queen Herodias(played by the excellent-as ever-Judith Anderson). It also ignores the account given by the eminent Jewish historian ,Josephus who claims she went on to marry two members of her own family ,Philip the Tetrach and Aristobulus .Provided ,however that you are not a stickler for such things as historical accuracy ,this is a ripe and enjoyable melodrama.

Salome -the lustrous Rita Hayworth -is banished from Rome by Caesar (a cameo from Cedric Hardwicke)who onjects ... Read More

VHS : It Started With Eve
Would anyone not take a bet that a 20-year-old young woman would be mincemeat if she tried to take a film away from the skilled and hammy hands of Charles Laughton, especially when Laughton, to modern eyes, looks suspiciously like he's playing Tim Conway playing one of Conway's old, tottering geezers? It Started With Eve, an attractive romantic comedy, stars Deanna Durbin, Robert Cummings and Charles Laughton. It was a shame Laughton wasn't a few years younger. He and Durbin turn out to be quite a pair, both of them adept at delivering smart lines, doing subtle double-takes or moving from subversive good cheer to tear-jerker moments of sincerity. They dominate the film and they do it as equals. Robert Cummings was a skilled light-weight lead. Here. as in so many of his films, he just doesn't have the leading-man gravitas to appear as anything ... Read More

VHS : Ruggles of Red Gap
Charles Laughton is sublime as Marmaduke Ruggles, long time British manservant to the Earl of Burnstead in the delightful comedy "Ruggles Of Red Gap. After years of servility Ruggles' services are won as a result of a poker bet to Egbert Floud of Red Gap, Washington played by Charlie Ruggles. Floud, a throwback to the days of the old West, is being cultured and refined while in Paris by his wife Effie played by a haughty and domineering Mary Boland.

The plan is for Ruggles to accompany the Flouds back to Red Gap. With much hidden trepidation, the genteel Laughton assents to his new assignment in the frontier like Red Gap. Egbert, who is not used to the idea of servitude treats Laughton with cordiality and equality which is unfamiliar to him.

When they arrive in Red Gap, Egbert's friendly attitude to Laughton has the locals ... Read More
