VHS : Magnificent Seven
This movie was made in the days before film-makers realized that people were sophisticated enough to recognize corn when they saw it. Horz Bucholz's impetuous kid act was just total corn. Talk about bad acting. Robert Vaughn deliberately affects some kind of bizarre weakling voice quality.

The whole premise of the movie was that the villagers were wothless cowards but Bronson goes off his head proclaiming how brave they are because they're dirt scratching farmers. The 40 banditos ride into the village and the hired guns(the seven) expose themselves in positions where they could easily be shot by less than half of 40 banditos.

The banditos get the drop on the seven when the seven return to the village and the ultimate in movie absurdity happens. The banditos ... Read More

I first saw this movie in the theaters as a teenager, I took my little brothers and sister to see it and it was so good we stayed in the theater for a second showing. My friends and I that watched it when it arrived were all laughing and enjoyed the movie immensly. Something this good never goes out of style.

VHS : Candy (1968) (Ws)
The title character of this wacky, uneven comedy, Candy Christian, has a beguiling innocence and nubile figure that entices every man she meets. Her manner with them is inquisitive and soft.
The men are prominent and include Doctor Krankheit, a famous neuro-surgeon (James Coburn) and the Indian guru Grindle (Marlon Brando). They urgently want a piece of Candy, but their feelings for her are ambivalent because their desire is confounded by their professional etiquette or dignity, like a skin they wear as a matter of career survival, but which is incongruent with making love to such a free spirit. As a result, they are strict and controlling, as if to banish doubt. Coburn is good; Brando is a far cry from his Terry Malloy and Stanley Kowalski roles and is the funniest person in the movie.

Director John Huston was known for having said that he let Bette Davis loose when he directed her performances. Here's a fine example. As Stanley Timberlake, a young Bette Davis is unleashed to royally throw tantrums of a very spoiled brat of a wealthy heir. Her sister, played by Olivia de Haviland usually takes the tormenting hits that Davis dishes out.

If a viewer believes Scarlet O'Hara (from "Gone with the Wind") was a spoiled Southern brat, Stanley Timberlake is the more modern day, more realistic version of that character. Davis' Stanley makes Leigh's Scarlet seem way less self-centered and as if she cared about several people other than herself. Stanely Timberlake doesn't give a hoot, frankly.

This motion picture gives an early glimpse of how great a character portrayal Davis ... Read More

VHS : Rhapsody in Blue
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb--I do not ... Read More

Made in 1943 by the great George Stevens, it is highly entertaining with Jean Arthur at her best. Charles Coburn won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the crafty old guy who put the young couple into position to fall in love.

VHS : Bachelor Mother
A warm-hearted family movie that makes you laugh. In the era of Hollywood where they did not need overt sexual activity to entertain, but relied upon the skills of the actors, this is another of those classic movies you can enjoy with the whole family. David Niven and Ginger Rogers are wonderful together. The banter is quick and witty, though enough is there for kids to enjoy, if those kids are used to seeing movies that are not "dumbed down", as most are today.

No spoilers here: the best scene is New Year's Eve party where Ginger Rogers pretends to know no English.

Where is the US DVD release of this fine movie??

I bought this video new. The story line is excellent. The acting is excellent. The scene in the courtroom is clever and excellent. The depiction of American history is excellent. The costumes are stylized and overwrought, as was typical during the earlier days of Hollywood. The film is an excellent teaching device for kids. This film was one of the eternal favorites of our parents' generation and our grandparents' generation. But there is a slight problem. There are irritating crackling noises throughout. Why is this? The crackling noises make the movie almost unbearable. I was only able to watch this otherwise excellent movie only once. I own about 50 videotapes, many of them bought second hand. Crackling noises of the same type occur on only one of these, namely, Three Stooges in Orbit, which I bought new. Can any of the reviewers ... Read More

VHS : Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES is a wonderful and entertaining comedy that does not miss a bit in pure enjoyment.Howard Hawk's direction glistens with spirit and finesse. Each song is jubilant and well staged. There are numerous reviews before mine that outline the plot, but it simply is about a golddigger with a heart of gold trying to look out for her own best interest who simultaneously is being pursued by a dorky and wealthy young heir to a fortune for marriage, and a lascivious elderly gentleman owner smitten with the young beauty(Monroe) who steals his wife's diamond tiara for her pleasure and company.Jane Russell is along for the ride and acts as a conscience and quasi big sister for MM. For the 50's of the Lucy era,the film is quite illuminating in its tones of implied sexuality in the costumes emphasizing ample cleavage and the voluptuous hips of Monroe ... Read More
