VHS : Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella
This is excatly what I remember watching growing up. Once a year in the mid-60's Cinderella would come on, and I couldn't wait for it. I still remembered all the songs. It's a musical being a Rodgers & Hammerstein's. Not something that today's children are use to. I really enjoyed it.

I would recommend this film for classic film fans only--and even then, I was disappointed.

The film opens in an amazing scene: the beautiful, yet tormented looking, Virginia seems to awaken from some sleep or haze on a park bench. She hears a voice. She is not quite sure where she is, or what she is doing...The mystery of it all draws you into this truly amazing story.

We learn where Virginia is, but not why she is there just yet. She is in a state mental hospital. Via a flashback of her husband's recount of their relationship we learn why he put her here.

Then the movie turns into a psychoanalyst-lover's dream. A little too textbook for my taste: everything is linked to a traumatic childhood, unreasonable guilt, and a lack of love. Transference and ... Read More

VHS : Tom Sawyer
This is a favorite from my childhood. I saw it in the theatre when it was first released, and I owned the album and the (widescreen) laser disc.

I was so disappointed to see that this was a full frame transfer, and a lousy one at that! One of the biggest thrills of this movie was its wide open vistas of the Mississippi River and the wonderful cinematography. This DVD release from MGM/UA is grainy, dark and at times fuzzy. The sound is terrible too, and it was terrific on the laser disc in 5.1 surround. You're missing the wonderful, detailed orchestrations by John Williams of the tuneful Sherman Brothers score. I would only recommend this DVD to you if you HAVE to own a copy of it, even a bad one. I suppose it's better than nothing at all. But not by much.

My hope is now that ... Read More

Terrific in every way. Introduced me to Richard Jordan, an actor whose work always grabbed me by the throat, who could go toe to toe with any actor of his day (if he had been able to finish playing Dr. Kohl in The Fugitive, what a confrontation that would have been at the end!) and who died far, far too soon. The brief scenes between him and Henry Fonda (who puts the curse on him and his family) are unforgettable (watch Fonda to see how a strong man can crumble and Jordan to see how a strong man can crack just a little bit). Each tape has two episodes. Don't start them too late in the evening, or like me you'll be up until 2 am finishing them.

when people write a bad review about an item, in this case a DVD, that they never should have purchased if they didn't like musicals, or bought it, watched it, and came back here to give it a bad review because they enjoyed a different version of the film that included actors they enjoyed more. I've never seen the Philadelphia Story, although I would like to do so one day. If I enjoy TPS more than "High Society," that doesn't automatically make HS worthless.

I've always loved this movie and decided to purchase it today. When I saw two 1-star ratings, I had to see if there was some kind of flaw in the actual DVD (cut scenes, etc.). The film is great to watch and includes cast of legendary actors singing and performing and singing an excellent score. How bad could it be to watch a film that includes these wonderful ... VHS : Gentleman's Agreement
Do you, as do I, have to fight an urge to run for cover when the term "message movie" crops up? Not to worry, because in this case GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947) is a fine movie with a great cast, excellent pacing, and just enough wit and verve to highlight its headon treatment of post-World War Two anti-semitism.

Gregory Peck plays Philip Green, writer for a NEWSWEEK-type weekly magazine, who sells himself on the subject of anti-semitism and goes semi-underground as "Philip Greenberg," a Jewish American who is determined to negotiate his life and get to all the good stuff (club memberships, social life, personal acceptance) that the then-WASP aristocracy controlled with varying degrees of denial and arrogance.

Phil finds himself not only making waves trying to do some of the things he could effortlessly have ... Read More
