VHS : She's Out of Control
I love this movie. It's funny and makes me nostalgic because I was just a kid when it came to theaters. The acting is great and the situations are funny. I just wish some studio would re-release the movie! Look at the other '80s teen movies on this site: $6.99-$12.99. This one: starting at $54!!! No way! Hopefully, in time, they will release it in an anniversary edition or something. Then I'll definitely buy it.

VHS : Garbo Talks
There is hardly a difference in the approach that the estimable Anne Bancroft takes as the incorrigible Estelle Rolfe in this sentimental 1984 comedy versus what she did three years later as the equally feisty Helene Hanff in David Jones' 84 Charing Cross Road. Somehow, this fine actress can take what may appear to be a caricature on paper and infuse it with her special blend of warmth and moxie to make the characters come alive. Just as it was Helene's love of antiquarian books that drove the story of the later film, it is Esther's adoration of screen legend Greta Garbo that drives this movie. Perpetually jailed for her overzealous liberal activism, Esther discovers she has a malignant brain tumor and asks her son Gilbert to help her fulfill her last wish - to meet Garbo.

A wonderful movie with fine performances by a great ensemble cast. The whole film, from start to finish is excellent. Lithgow's performance as an adoptive father striving to encourage his adopted daughter's, Salonga, musical career will touch a lot of buttons. Her longing to know her birth family is topical as well as intensely personal, a good blend. The adoptive mother flits in and out; obviously not all that interested in her adoptive daughter. Lithgow's sudden death leads to to a further estrangement between mother and daughter. A trip to visit Lithgow's sister starts a whole new series of events for Salonga and her meeting with Daniels and all that comes from that. The ending is a complete surprise but at the same times, explains much. A well crafted and performed movie. Even ... Read More

VHS : Razor's Edge (1984)
One cannot help but be mesmerized by the wordcraft of Willy Maugham. Perhaps the best novel of all time is his "The Moon and Sixpence," a quasi-biographical social commentary of late 19th early 20th century mores and expectations.

In this fine novel, "The Razor's Edge," Larry, a young veteral of WWI, destined to financial "success" decides to go on the route to--pardon the cliche--"enlightenment." The woman who loves him, Izzy, cannot stomach that and marries Gray Maturin, Larry's buddy who'se always been in love with Izzy.

Well, heaven knows other reviewers have covered the stories theme so I won't repeat that here.

As I travelled in the same portions of the world through with Larry treked--though not with anywhere near the conscientious "search" that ... Read More

Leads to understanding profound truths through a mix of eye candy and clear ideas, lags a teeny bit in places, but generally a magnet for ideas leading to AHA's. I loved it, as I do most of Gregg's productions.

The acting is poor, the storyline is weak. There are much better movies out there that deal with the topic of gambling addiction.

VHS : Eight Days a Week
If you ever had a hopeless crush or been placed in "the friend zone" this is must-see. Joshua Schaefer is charming, witty, and adorable. You're rooting for him from the very beginning. Keri Russell is perfect as the dream girl. R.D. Robb plays the perverted wingman to Schaefer and provides his fair share of laughs.
Peter (Schaefer) has been in love with Erica (Russell) for all the years they've lived across the street from each other. Finally, the summer before they're both heading to different colleges he decides to camp out on her front lawn to prove his love for her and declares that he will stay there until she returns the sentiment.
This movie has great observational humor. It's funny and relatable. I saw it shortly after it first came out and tried for ages to find the DVD. Now that you've ... Read More
