If only this was on DVD, but we can't have everything. Great story and better than fair acting. When it comes out on DVD I'll be buying it again, if only for the scenery.

VHS : The Man Who Knew Too Much
In my humble opinion, some of the best movies I've ever seen were good old classics like this one. Although I am only 22 years of age, Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors, and this is my favorite of Hitchcock's works. Doris Day outdid herself as the mourning mother, and the two of them did a very good job playing a married couple. I think this movie, as far as the acting is concerned, was way ahead of its time. Method acting was still in its infancy (if that) but the two of them did such an outstanding job, especially in the scene when Jimmy Stewart's character first tells Doris Day's character that their son has been kidnapped. The boy was my only complaint about the whole movie. Kids really didn't know how to act back then. So if you're looking for a good mystery/suspense as only Hitchcock ... Read More

4.Career (1959) starring: Dean Martin, Anthony Franciosa, Shirley MacLaine, Carolyn Jones, Joan Blackman

VHS : Career (1959)
Anthony Franciosa stars as a young actor who goes to New York with big dreams and, of course, finds that it's a lot harder to make it on the stage than he realized. Dean Martin co-stars as his director/buddy, Shirley MacLaine is the alcoholic daughter of a famed Broadway producer with whom both men get involved, and Carolyn Jones is a former actress turned successful agent. There's nothing in this material that is original or especially fresh, since it follows a basic plotline we've seen before. Franciosa comes on strong (and sometimes too strong) as the idealistic actor who must decide how much idealism he can afford. Martin is solid and understated, while MacLaine chews the scenery when allowed. Jones creates the most memorable character, mixing in pathos, humour, and a world-weary experience. ... Read More

VHS : How The West Was Won
The Blu Ray release of How the West Was Won is by far the best version released to date. The frames are nearly perfectly aligned and synchronized. The "smile box" format is a real treat. It simulates the Cinerama theatre experience very well. The soundtrack sounds great. Blu Ray has definitely improved home theatre audio which has suffered from low resolution and high data compression with DVD. If you are a fan of this film, an audiophile, a videophile, or a Cinerama enthusiast, you must own this. If you don't already own a Blu Ray player, get off your butt and go buy one! It is worth it for this version of How the West Was Won.

VHS : Last Train from Gun Hill
The John Sturges western "Last Train from Gun Hill" is another one of those chamber westerns from the 1950s where the villains corner the hero in an urban setting and both sides have to count down to their inevitable showdown based on a ticking clock. Aside from some early scenes shot outdoors, most of "Last Train from Gun Hill" occurs within the city limits of the frontier western town of Gun Hill. Furthermore, the story pits two long-time friends, a courageous lawman Kirk Douglas against a powerful cattle baron Anthony Quinn. When the story opens neither man has seen the other in years, but both have sons. Russian composer Dimitri Tiomkin provides "Last Train from Gun Hill" with another one of his brilliant, evocative orchestral scores that enlivens the drama.

The stalwart hero, Matt Morgan (Kirk ... Read More
