VHS : 'night, Mother
Read some of the other reviews and you'll know the basis of the story. But this kind of film is not for everyone. The story line is difficult to say the least. A woman determined to kill herself and the mother (who loves her more than anyone else in this world) trying desperately to find a way to stop it from happening. If suicide is too distressing a subject for you, do not watch this film. If you are thinking of suicide, do not watch this film. It evidences how someone can convince themselves that this is the right choice (which it is not), but hopefully it also points to the fact that a suicide always deeply, adversely and irreversibly affects someone else in this world, even if it's just the person who finds the body (I know of which I speak). This movie may be boring for some, but ... Read More

VHS : Belle of New York
The Belle of New York is one of Astaire's lesser musicals, and for good reasons. The story line is a little simple minded. The secondary comic relief characters aren't all that comic. Vera Ellen paired with Astaire made for a screen relationship with few sparks. But the movie has more screen time of Astaire dancing than any of his other films, the songs by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer are easy to listen to and reflect the age nicely, and Vera Ellen is a pretty good hoofer in her own right. "Baby Doll" should have become a standard, and Astaire's dancing in the "Sands of Time" number is a classic. If you appreciate Astaire, you'll want to watch this.

VHS : P.D. James - The Black Tower
The Black Tower is one of my favorite PD James novels. I love the way that James uses dialogue by supporting characters to make one reflect on what Dalgliesh's inner thoughts and feelings might be. This novel has some particularly cutting commentary about disability and how that affects one's perception of oneself and relationships, and some discomforting reflections on the uncomfortability of the physically able in the presence of the disabled and their (the physically able) need to de-sexualize the disabled and aged. This is one of the novels where we see Dalgliesh at his most introspective. He is questioning himself and his profession and has resolved to leave the force and stop being a detective.

However, the ITV version of Black Tower loses all of this. It is only a detective story. ... Read More

VHS : The Barkleys of Broadway
After a ten year hiatus, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers got together made their tenth and final movie together. Finding Astaire 50 years old, and Rogers, 38, it's the dancing couple's first and only picture together in color, full, saturated Technicolor, no less.

The movie differs from the stars' previous work in that they start out as a bickering married couple. Rogers is tired of being made to feel that Astaire has been her Svengali and craves a serious move. (Kitty Foyle, somebody?) The French climax was a brilliant touch.

Astaire is awesome. The "Shoes With Wings" routine, I feel was only the third best dance scene in the movie. "Bouncing The Blues," an entertaining workout, was incredible! Staccato taps, to stripper-like finish with Rogers concealing their affection with the curtain ... Read More

Thank God for Michael J. Fox!!! He was in his prime when he made this film. It is hilarious! Margaret Whitton is brilliant as "Auntie" Vera, especially in the limo scene(OH YEAHHHHHHHHHHH). I love the shots of New York, especially of the World Trade Center - pre9/11! All in all, a very funny and enjoyable movie. It's great when your feeling blue, out of a job or school(makes you want to be like "Brantley Foster/Carlton Whitfield). A great tribute to the 80's!!!!!!!!
