VHS : Great Caruso
This is a highly fictionaliased and heavily sentimental portrait of the great operatic tenor .It is lavishly mounted and has many popular ingredients which all helped in making it a major commercial hit in its day.

There is the rags to riches nature of the story as Enrico Caruso rises from poverty on the back streets of Naples to becoming the darling of New York society ,overcoming the death of his mother while still a child and building a carrer in the opera houses of Europe before his US debut. There is the theme of his falling in love with a scion of New York society ,in the face of unbending parental disapproval .There are lots of popular operatic arias and a strong dose of religiosity ,with the Bach -Gounoud "Ave Marie" a particular standout ..for those with more populist taste ... VHS : Madame X (1966)
So many people seem to like this film - Madame X. I don't. I 've seen
it on television and am glad I never saw it in a theater in 1966.
The cast is excellent (Lana Turner, John Forsythe, Burgess Meredith,
Ricardo Montalban, Joan Whats-Her-Name)but the plot and the schmaltzy
dialogue plus the tear-jerking conclusion leave me laughing and that's it.
Why was this movie made ? And as late as 1966. This is a 1940'-50's film,
in my opinion, and outdated by the Sixties. But so many people seem to like
it. Sentimentality. Sob, sob, sob......You can have Madame X. This should have been made as a farce....

This film is fondly remembered from my childhood (Egypt was a terrific craze at the time - King Tut exhibit, Elizabeth Taylor's movie, the Mummy) and I still enjoyed it. But ... its very sexist. All Mika Waltari's (the author of the novel the script is derived form) work has a masochistic woman as the terrible, unattainable, irresistible and finally destroyed woman. Most of his novels have the woman being beaten. This one only dies of a disease (however in poverty and disgrace). So, yes, I still liked it (especially the references to Tutankhamen - see Velikovsky's analogy to the Oedipal myth) but I really look forward to the day when woman writers/directors get together to create these huge romantic epics with women who aren't either doormats for the hero or die.

Great performance by Cagney. As everyone else has mentioned - with so many BAD war movies out - where's the DVD of this?

I first saw this movie as a kid when it was first released. I have seen it a number of times since then and always enjoy it. Is the casting a little 'off'? Certainly! Is the idea of Bogart as a priest somewhat strange? Absolutely! But does he play the role well? Yes! Is Lee J. Cobb amusing as a Chinese Warlord? Indeed! Is his make-up exaggerated? Yes, beyond belief!!! But again, does he play his role well? Yes! And the others, do they play their roles well? No question! I read the reviews posted here and find that what others say is true - but - this is still an entertaining film, reasonably well acted, and has a superb cast. This is not a movie to be dismissed. It stands the test of time and it stands up to be reseeing. I whole heartedly recommend it to everyone.

This is your typical Lucille Ball. She is a terrific actress and comedianne. I agree with other reviewers, put this on DVD! The movie is a bit slow at first, but gets better and better as it progresses. My favorite part is when they are on the ship with the diamonds, except for the banana spiders... You will not be disappointed with this one if you love Lucy. It's just another testament to Lucy's prowess to dominate the comedy world.

7.The Little Foxes starring: Bette Davis, Herbert Marshall, Teresa Wright, Richard Carlson, Dan Duryea

VHS : The Little Foxes
There was never an actress like her and there is still no one in sight to take her place. Bette Davis lost the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1941 to Joanne Fontaine in "Suspicion." Though Fontaine was wonderful in the role of the innocent and frightened wife, the test of time shows Davis's performance to have been the great one.

"Little Foxes" was nominated for 9 Oscars but won none. It was a tough year to be in Academy competition when the competition included "Citizen Kane"," The Maltese Falcon, and "How Green Was My Valley." Sometimes success is a matter of the luck of timing.

This movie is based upon Lillian Hellman's stage play of the same name. As with most stage plays it was undoubtedly difficult to stage as a movie. Nevertheless, William Wyler, the director, did it as well as it can ... Read More

Bogart plays a mean drunk scriptwriter, and it's one of his best performances. There's a good plot to this and some great scenes, but in places the plot gets a little lost, so it loses a star.

Still well worth seeing, though.

VHS : Broken Lance
***1/2 1954. This film, a remake of Joseph L. Mankiewicz's House of Strangers (Fox Film Noir) was directed by Edward Dmytryk. Academy award earned by Philip Yordan (screenplay) and a nomination by Katy Jurado (Supporting role). Description of the relation between an authoritarian father and his four sons. BROKEN LANCE is a true Fox classic with a little violence and a lot of psychological considerations. Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark and Katy Jurado clearly outshine the rest of the cast, especially Robert Wagner who's as expressive as a stone. Recommended.
