VHS : Sweet Home Alabama
The first time I saw this one, I thought Witherspoon's character was a little too unlikable for the lead in a romantic comedy, however, after watching the movie more than once I don't feel as much that way. This is a nice movie that still has a few surprises even though you kind of get the feeling you know where things are going. The one thing this movie is lacking that usually shows up in most romantic comedies is a seriously dumb moment in which the characters look goofy and completely unbelievable. That's a plus. The movie has fun with sterotypes about the south and big cities like New York without going too far over the line. It's definitely worth buying a copy of this movie for occasions when you want to watch a nice light movie.

VHS : The Sand Pebbles
The Sand Pebbles is a Steve McQueen vehicle, no doubt one of his best movies, but it is also the unacknowledged epic of the sixties, when the genre began to decline as a mere Hollywood spectacle and was becoming a more thoughtful, more complext adventure that took on momentous themes--like the emergence of China as an independent country and world power. Add Candice Bergen, at her freshest, Richard Attenborough emerging as a key figure in movies, and several Hollywood veterans, like Richard Crenna, and you have a mix that offers both entertainment and a thoughtfully staged adventure, replete with exotic locales, suspenseful clashes, and a gripping ending. Longish, but nearly flawlessly directed by Robert Wise. The blu-ray edition restores it to its original glory.

VHS : The Human Face
A great series of hour-long episodes with host John Cleese introducing the human expression. It has some humor, but it is also factual with interviews with professionals and sad stories. This video is valuable for an artist to learn more about the reasons behind expression, but it is also a great video to watch for the sake of learning or information. A great tool for the classroom.

Despite the description given, this DVD does NOT have a wdescreen version on it. Only the opening credits and a few following scenes are in widescreen. The film then changes to full screen. Interestingly the ending also seems to have been truncated/cut off, e.g., not even "The End" apppears at the conclusion!

For what it may be worth, this film, especially the desert scenes, reminds me of "Hidalgo" and might even have served as the inspiration for that film. It has an excellent 5-Star cast and story but the DVD is a bust.

5.Century of Women Collection starring: Jane Fonda, Justine Bateman, Olympia Dukakis, Jasmine Guy, Talia Shire

This is an amazing video and should be shown to any class learning about reproduction, and or womens rights. It is an essential part of American history.

I first saw this movie when I was 11 and didn't understand half of what I was seeing because so much was coded or unsaid. This wonderful film is based on Mary McCarthy's book about 8 Vassar grads as they went forth, in the Depression Era, to make their contributions to emergent America and realize the potential of their educations.

This was the first movie I ever saw that discussed sexuality, marriage, and manners among the upper-middle class. This was the first film that used the words Lesbo and Sapphic. Other firsts were depictions of the mentally ill, adultery, female alcoholism, open marriage, domestic violence, psychoanalysis, pregnancy, childbearing and rearing, and childlessness within the historical context of the 1930s.

Somewhat a soap opera, the ensemble cast is excellent, ... Read More

SOLDIER BLUE (1970) was made during an era when Hollywood was redefining its view of Native Americans.

After years of showing Indians as blood-thirsty savages, hit movies like LITTLE BIG MAN and A MAN CALLED HORSE presented these people as relatively peaceful "human beings," and the white man as the villain.

As its climax, director Ralph Nelson's SOLDIER BLUE gave us a brutal, slightly fictionalized account of the infamous Sand Creek massacre, in which a group of Colorado militia slaughtered a village of over 150 peaceful Cheyenne, mostly women and children.

8.Oliver's Story starring: Ryan O'Neal, Candice Bergen, Nicola Pagett, Ed Binns, Benson Fong

VHS : Oliver's Story
If you love the books the movies won't disappoint you. Oliver's Story is very close to the book, and Segal does help write the screenplay.
Oliver's Story is obviosly not as compelling as Love Story, but uncomparable by the subject difference. Oliver does make ammends with his dad which has given him the purpose and meaning he cannot find without Jenny. O'Neal does some great acting! He brings our desperate, searching, Barrett to life.

It is my view that some types of novel do better when adapted for Tv rather than the movies and The Group by Mary McCarthy is one example .While not a long novel -like Dickens or the great Victorians wrote ( whose books also cry out for TV rather than cinema simply because they are so long)-it is one with a great many characters and even at 150 minutes the movie simply cannot do justice to them all
The Group was one of the earliest movies to show women's emotional development as individuals ,not simply lost souls awaiting salvation from the penis owning half of the world .
It is based on a book that is hard on the adapter having a focus on 8 graduates from Vassar in 1933 and tracing their lives over a 20 year period .It tries as does the book to give equal time to them all but in trying to cram so much into ... Read More

VHS : Domino Principle
This was a movie which tries to be a lot more than it is. It provided formulaic twists and turns, none too subtle allusions to vast conspiracies and ridiculously conceived manipulations of people. The formulaic plot creates more inconsistencies and than anything else and the move leaves many questions purposely unanswered in an attempt to get the audience to think. However, the primary question it raises is how can so many characters lack so much common sense?

This is the type of movie which was created with the intent to get its audience to ponder questions and twist and turns. Who was after whom, and why? However the director failed to realize that some questions must be answered to whet the appetite. This could have been an entertaining movie, and had the potential to do what it originally intended, but it fell ... Read More
