VHS : Love Letter (1998)
Growing up with Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition), I was intrigued by Hallmark Hall of Fame's Love Letter, based on a haunting 1959 short story by Jack Finney. Scott Corrigan is a Civil War buff who designs Civil War simulation games (check out the 1998 computer graphics!). One day as he and his fiancee Debra are shopping for a vintage wedding gown, he discovers an antique desk and it's love at first sight, even though he can't really afford it. Scott's also a restorer in his spare time, so when he tries to polish the desk, he discovers the (common Civil War) feature of a hidden compartment that contains a small bottle of ink, a fountain pen, and some blank stationary addressed "Elizabeth Whitcomb." He also finds a sensual, romantic letter to the imaginary man of Elizabeth's dreams, and ... Read More

This is a personal favorite. The author of the book, Nevil Shute, was an aircraft engineer and worked on the Airship R100. He also worked with the famous inventor Barnes Wallis. These facts give the film some credibility in regards to metallergy. Reading the book might give insight into the accuracy the film-maker put into the scientific statements Stewart's character spoke.

Regardless of the details it is still a good picture.

I saw apart of the movie on TV, but I didn't see it all. Actually, right now on september 18 2006 I started reading the book and am going to read the entire Tillerman series too. This is One of my Four top rated movies. And pretty much my top rated movies are the ones I'm adicted too. This is the greatest movie I've ever seen.I Love the character of Dicey. One I think she's the cutest.Mainly she's the oldest and she has the most responsibility. ActuallyI saw this movie about 2 or 3 years ago.And I remember it like it was yesterday too. It'll make you think your one of the Tillerman's in the movie. I'd reccomened this movie to anyone and everyone. Same with all of the Tillerman series books, even though I haven't read them all."YET"

VHS : Sheltering Sky
The Sheltering Sky is based on the book of the same name by expatriate writer, composer, and traveler, Paul Bowles. Bowles himself has led quite an interesting life, besides appearing in a cameo and as the narrator of The Sheltering Sky, he has settled in Tangiers, Morocco, where he has lived for 52 years with his Jane, where their neighbor was William S. Burroughs. Another writer he met along the way was Christopher Isherwood who utilized his last name for the character of Sally Bowles in the story that provided the basis for the musical, Cabaret.

Port Moresby (John Malkovich) would seem to be modeled on Bowles himself; however, there are some important differences. In an autobiography, the one thing that you can be reasonably sure of is the protagonist will not die, but to think that ... Read More

This video should be required viewing by all social workers. In many states, various Governmental agencies really are that "trigger-happy" in being willing to remove a minor child from a potentially abusive or neglectful situation, and the amount of grief that can cause the child really is quite serious, as the film itself portrays.
On suspicion of criminal neglect on the part of the mother for her daughter, the daughter is whisked away to some secret state-run orphanage that might as well have been Juvenile Hall for all the freedom the child has, and the mother is even denied simple visitation or even to know if her child is OK.
It is a difficult issue: Where a home life is less than absolutely healthy, ought the State intervene to remove the child(ren) and place them elsewhere, and if so, under what ... Read More

VHS : Operation Pacific
John Wayne gives a strong, honest performance as the skipper of the Thunderfish. Wayne is tasked with two missions. One is to win back his wife (Patricia Neal). The second is to fix the dud torpedoes plaguing the U.S. Pacific Fleet and crippling the Navy's efforts against the Imperial Japanese Navy. The film plays well and is a classic of WW2 submarine flicks.
