VHS : Shrek (Special Edition)

Ever since I saw the movie Shrek when it first came out in theaters, I saw it as a story intentionally subversive to empire (not just the "Disney Empire"). However I have not found anyone else explicate these themes. So I thought now is as good a time as any to do that. And so here are my thoughts on the movie Shrek as 'imperial' critique.

Shrek is an Ogre. A monster. Something to be feared. Those who are hunting for him with torches and pitchforks have their fantasy-projections of what ogres are like. But is he really as bad as his pursuers think? Perhaps monsters are mere projections of our prejudices and fears onto those who represent the unknown. In this way, 'the other' is part of our mythologizing, whose identity is constructed by the dominant story-tellers ... Read More

The movie is GREAT, the way it was shot, the camera work, the exceptional action, the story-lines, everything! The masterful story developing when it goes through waves to culmination is mesmerizing.
I can't speak about this work otherwise as in superlative terms and it is why it had 10 academy nominations.
The story is incredibly deep, the dialogs are unbelievably smart and trough to life. In every shot, angle, camera movement, music there is so much of cool, artistic interpretation and sophistication. My humble description can even remotely capture the splendor of this work.

VHS : My Best Friend's Wedding
Sharp-witted and genuinely engaging, `My Best Friend's Wedding' is a surefire hit for anyone interested in a crowd pleasing romantic comedy. It has a few missteps, that's a give in, but the charming performances and blissful ending (not one you might expect) make up for the few errors in judgment.

The film tells the story of Julianne Potter, a successful woman approaching thirty who is afraid of falling in love. Truth be told, she is in love, with Michael O'Neal, her best friend of over nine years. The two had once been together but quickly fell apart only to realize that they were too close to be lovers. When Michael calls to inform Julianne he is engaged she is suddenly thrown into panic mode as she realizes that she needs to be with Michael. She flies off for the wedding with one ... Read More

I loved the cast, some of the acting was rough. The story line was choppy and didn't flow well or back to itself. If you like a collection of short stories without a beginning, middle or end; you'll enjoy this.
