VHS : Bagdad Cafe
A zaftig German tourist has a major tiff with her boorish husband in the middle of the desert outside Las Vegas, yanks a suitcase out of the car and stomps off for points unknown. Her husband, perhaps to make a point, drives off without looking back.

Several hours later, the wife (Marianne Sagebrecht) arrives dusty and dishevelled at the only populated spot on the horizon, the run-down, lethargic Bagdad Oil and Gas and Cafe, run by a cranky woman named Brenda(the incomparable CCH Pounder). Brenda has just driven her husband away with her hystrionics, but her disposition seems earned; she is riding herd on a failing business, assisted only by a less-than-inspired cook, while trying to keep track of a free-spirit teenage daughter who cavalierly rides off with motorcyclists and truck ... I first saw this movie in a sci-fi class during college and loved it. Sad that it wasn't picked up by the TV studios. I would love to see/buy it again but it only seems available in VHS. Hoping that a DVD version might be released soon?

As Carly Norris said: "You like to watch, watch this!"

But seriously, don't watch this, unless you are fascinated by train wrecks, and enjoy seeing a movie spin totally out of control. Joe Eszterhas has recently been born again, after a bout with throat cancer he has given up tobacco, booze, writing trashy but successful scripts, and instead he's taken up the cross. I wish him luck. So far, he has yet to sell any scripts, but he has written a few books. Looking over his oeuvre, there are some successes and some spectacular failures. I'll get to 'Sliver' in a minute, but first a brief recap:

'Flashdance' was rather ridiculous in premise, nevertheless, a huge success. 'Jagged Edge' I haven't seen, but from the afterbuzz I sense that it was a taut courtroom drama that may ... Read More

I purchased this documentary to supplement a 5th grade unit on slavery. I can't imagine a better way for students to learn about the experiences African Americans faced under the institution of slavery than these first hand accounts. This documentary has been wonderfully done. The 'actors' are such a small part of the overall production. Not once did it detract from the themes of the film.

There were a couple bits that I choose to skip due to content and age of the audience. And while the picture painted was harsh, it was reality for those living in slavery. Clearly anyone viewing this with children of any age needs to be ready to have a heavy discussion prior to and after viewing.

VHS : Cora Unashamed
This is a story about the shame that binds us, and the truth that sets us free. It's about adolescent love, classism, racism, and a love that crosses all the boundaries.

Regina Taylor is a class act, and plays her characters with dignity and grace. Playing a woman who is fully expected to sacrifice her life for the family she works for, Ms. Taylor does as fine a job in this feature as she does in the TV series "I'll Fly Away" with Sam Waterston - one of my all time favorites.

When she loses her child to whooping cough, Cora's dedication to the little white girl she cares for, who was her daughter's friend, deepens. The story becomes more tragic as the true nature of the little girl's relationship with her own mother is based on the mother's shame, lies, and secrets. The way that shame ... Read More

Streep and Maclaine are outstandingly hilarious as mother and daughter. Both these actresses also show off their vocal talents and Streep is obviously talented enough to have succeeded entirely on her singing.
