VHS : Time Of Their Lives
In the early 1940's Bud Abbot and Lou Costello produced many many 'b' films for universal. The usual pattern was that bullying Abbot and Child like Costello somehow get involved with mad scientists, gangsters and adventurers concocting wild schemes. Prat falls and chases are their stock in trade. This film however was a break from that pattern and the effect is magic.

It starts in Revolutionary New York where Lou is a struggling tinker and Bud the major Domo for a Tory land owner. This seems pretty much in their usual patter but in short order Lou is mistaken for a British spy and along with the lady of the mannor murdered and cursed.

Time passes and their ghosts, trapped by the curse, are doomed to linger on the grounds of the manor until they can prove their innocence.

Perhaps not their best movie but a favorite of A&C fans because it contains some of their classic routines, including the "Who's on First" bit. There is also a great schtick where Lou is looking through a porthole, his face covered in shaving cream, and Joe Sawyer looks out, also lathered up, and thinks he's seeing his own image in a mirror. The weird thing is they don't look anything alike. The picture has something to do with the boys working on a riverboat and getting involved with gamblers, but the plot is its least important concern. The ending is classic A&C slapstick shenanigans. Fun to watch.

The film opens in early 20th century London. A cloaked figure attacks and kills a person walking on the sidewalk. Another unsolved murder. Women are demonstrating for the vote - they put on a song and dance for equal rights! There is a protest from onlookers and comic violence. Bruce Adams is the reporter who covers this happening. Tubby and Slim are employed as Bobbies to study police methods. Dr. Jekyll is studying the human mind so as to control mankind for its betterment. Does he have a secret in his basement? Is there a serum that brings out the bestial nature of mankind? [Was this story a parable for alcohol prohibition?]

Tubby and Slim see someone climbing up the side of a theater; they think it is a burglar. Tubby searches for the burglar and sees the monster. There is a comic chase, but the monster escapes and lands in a wax museum. Tubby ... Read More

VHS : Abbott & Costello: Wistful Widow of Wagon Gap
This film is set in Montana. A stagecoach stops 3 miles from Wagon Gap, a dangerous town. Two salesmen walk the rest of the way. Chester shoots his pistol. "Nice Shooting!" But things look bad until the Citizen's Committee intervene. There will be a trial in the saloon. Montana law said anybody who killed a man in a duel becomes responsible for the upkeep of the dead man's widow and children. "That's the way I'd have done it." The bread is passed around, then soup is served. [This must be one of the funniest scenes.] Can that dog spell? Can Duke win in a poker game? "He needs the rest."

Will a message be garbled in the retelling? Does anyone want Chester's job? Sheriff Wooley finds new power and respect. But there is a rumor about wealth for Widow Hawkins. Will there be a chase? Will the gold shipment be saved? Can the sheriff capture the gang? Will the ... Read More
