Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : League of Gentlemen
Basil Dearden's seldom seen 1960 heist film The League of Gentlemen has provided the template for almost every significant heist film which has followed it from Oceans 11 to the Italian Job and others.

The film follows the exploits of Hyde (Jack Hawkins) an ex British military officer who has been forced into mandatory retirement as he plans and executes a major British bank robbery. Gathering around him a group of exmilitary experts he puts together a methodical robbery plan that he feels is gauranteed not to fail. The excellent ensemble cast includes Nigel Patrick (Race), Roger Livesey (Mycroft) and Richard Attenborough (Lexy).

The film starts rather slowly as the plan is hatched but then moves into overdrive as the actual planning of the robbery is organized. This ... Read More

VHS : The Guns of Navarone (Special Edition)
The reissued DVD version of THE GUNS OF NAVARONE is a great improvement over my tired old VHS copy. Not only is the film in widescreen presentation, the color and sound is superior to the tape version.

As with most Alistair MacLean inspired movies we find a story with a handful of commandos, plan gone awry with double agents in their midst, battling a large contingent of the Wehrmacht. One wonders what the Germans were doing with all that substantial air power, armor, and artillery on a small island at a time when the Eastern front was collapsing. The same situation was encountered in WHERE EAGLES DARE and FORCE TEN FROM NAVARONE.

The Plot: In a bid to gain a foothold on the Dodecanese Islands the British landed a force on Kheros. Unfortunately the Germans had other ... Read More

VHS : Quatermass 2
Professor Barnard Quatermass (Brian Donlevy of "Gamera the Invincible") returns in "Quatermass 2," the sequel to Hammer Production's "The Quatermass Xperiment." This classic science fiction horror masterpiece is as excellent, if not superior, as the original. Professor Quatermass appears to have mellowed since we first met him; he displays more compassion towards his fellow man.

Professor Quatermass learns that meteorites of uniform size and shape are falling at regular intervals and landing in a particular site. Upon further investigation, he learns the landing site is near a top secret government facility that contains huge domes. He is told that synthetic food is stored in these domes? Synthetic food for whom . . . or what? The true nature of this facility is being kept a secret ... Read More

This is based on Jan de Hartog's book: The Captain. Both are essentially the same story but you'd swear they were different. Both are worth the effort.

VHS : Colditz Story
"The Colditz story" is a true story. I have read the book of the same title, written by Patrick Reid, a British escapee. It really is an amazing story, and I have been always partial to movies about prison breaks. The movie claims that more people escaped from this "escape proof" POW camp than in all the other POW camps combined (I don't think that is realistic, but an impressive claim nonetheless).

George Roy Hill the director of "The Sting" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" once said "The Audiences love how-to". It's true. People watching movies like to see how things are done; all the details. I think that was one of the key elements that this film was missing. The escapes are amazing but we don't get to see much about them. The POWs sneak out at night dressed like German guards but where did they get the materials for ... Read More

VHS : I Am a Dancer
As a professional dancer this was the first video i got when i was at the National school of Dance in Mexico passed down from fellow students, i had to copy it from beta to beta, then beta to vhs, and now from vhs to dvd..altough my videotape is very overused this is by far my favorite yet. Altough i own a huge ballet video collection, none can match this, from his astonishing beats in La Sylphide, and the great partnership with Carla Fracci, to the modern aproach of Field figures, and the SUPREME pas de deux from Sleeping Beauty, with Seymoure, every time i'm going to dance sleeping beauty, i watch it over and over again...& i find new cues, new details, new accents. If you can get this, you wont regret.
Just a curious note: Nureyev didn't like the outcome of this video and he wanted to destroy all the copies, but when it was at the ... Read More

9.December Flower starring: Jean Simmons, Mona Washbourne, Bryan Forbes
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : December Flower
A Stephen Frears mini masterpiece. Beautifully acted by Mona Washbourne, Jean Simmons and Pat Heywood, this is a story about the abuse of an elderly woman. Made bed-ridden by the poor diet inflicted upon her by a mean spirited housekeeper (in cohoots with the woman's inheritance-greedy relatives) until an affectionate and caring niece arrives and is appalled by what she sees. Making sure her diet is improved and getting the elderly woman to get out of bed, she awakens the old woman's former sense of humour and well-being, manifesting itself in ghastly acts of bad taste just to offend the inheritance seekers. It is a gleeful old woman who watches the appalled expression on the faces of her relatives when she shows them her new Mickey Mouse telephone and repulsive new fireplace. Sad, hysterically funny and ultimately triumphant, this tightly scripted ... Read More
