I think it's pretty good for young horse crazy girls like I used to be. I rented this from the library so many times when I was young I think I wore the tape out!

My only question is why isn't this available on DVD?

VHS : Goodbye Pork Pie (Amazon.com Exclusive)
While American car chase movies of this era featured high powered V8's this is the hilarious story of a group of individuals thrown together by circumstance driving the length of New Zealand in a stolen Mini. Scenery that rivals Lord of the Rings, a journey of self discovery for the characters and plenty of fast paced action. We're driving this car to Invercargill - take it away Blondini!

VHS : Treasure of the Yankee Zephyr - (aka "Race for the Yankee Zephyr")
This should have been a three-star movie. It has merits, chief of which is the use of the same stunning South Island (New Zealand) scenery that appeared in the Lord of the Rings films, but without the digital trickery.

There are a few authentically kiwi moments: the scene where the heroes tow a broken helicopter into an isolated farm, where the farmers turn it into something like a moon buggy using only number 8 wire and four-by-two draws on one of the classic New Zealand myths (kiwi engineering, mate); the mountain hut where people drop round spontaneously to drink and sing old songs is another, and completely true to life (no, seriously, it is); and the scene where the old codger is thrown out of the pub and tries to get back through the wall with a chain saw is adapted from a sequence ... This film on the surface is a tale of an episode in the Maori Wars in New Zealand in the 1870's in which a Maori scout - Te Wheke - turns 'renegade'. Te Wheke embarks upon a vengeance raid after the murder of his family by the colonial troops he has been serving with. The film weaves an intricate web of relationships between complex and intelligently scripted characters that are set within an equally complex society in which two conflicting cultures are alternately accommodating and warring with each other and among themselves. I had to watch this film several times before I really began to appreciate it and understand what it was about....and I'm glad I had the patience. Essentially the film explores the whole concept of vengeance - the meaning of 'utu'. The film depicts how the innocent pay the price for the ... Read More

VHS : Death Warmed Up
A guy (Michael Hurst) is given an experimental drug that causes him to kill his parents w/ a shotgun. He is then committed to a mental institution for seven years. Upon his release, our hero takes a trip w/ his girlfriend and another couple to a remote island. The same island where he'd received the drug! You see, he's out for revenge against the doctor who destroyed his life, and nothing's gonna stop him! However, there's more going on than he realizes, including twisted brain surgeries that have helped the evil doctor create an army of crazed zombies! This one's rather grim, w/ a few humorous moments in between the exploding heads and impalements. There's even a bit of nudiness near the beginning! Not too awful, just don't expect a masterpiece...

The invasion scene where the giant invasion ship spikes into the planet and the millions of ruthless troops run out is amazing on the big screen, hold on, thats "Chronicles of Riddick," yes, this film was made with a budget of about 20 quid, and could almost be a stage play for its "set-piece-iness", but this is a thoughtful and interesting film.

Following a late viewing on a sunday night some years ago, it caused significant discussion on monday morning in the office as to the fate of the main character in the end scene. Mind you, the lyrics to "Martikas Kitchen" also provoked similar discussion so don't let that guide you too much.

Seriously, this will probably be remade by George Clooney soon, but he will be doing well to make it as good as this. So if you like spaceships and explosions ... Read More

VHS : The Efficiency Expert
Anthony Hopkins is the efficency expert. In this movie he is to decide if an old shoe factory is to be closed and the staff fired. When he first arrives, he's ready to close the factory, but as the movie progresses he finds that the workers are more useful that he first thought. As the movie progressed he moved from a man who was just as empathetic as the character he portrayed in "Nixon" to someone who actually relates to other human beings...the funny part is that a slot car race at the local club is the act that finally fosters a change in him. The movie drags in spots but I think it was done intentionally to give a laid back contrast to the hard charging but souless expert.

VHS : Jack Be Nimble
Strange New Zealand film full of psychological suspense and psychic silliness. Alexis Arquette (Sometimes They Come Back Again) stars as the titular Jack, a young man who was cruelly abused by his adopted parents and their four witches from hell daughters. We follow little Jack and his sister Dora, who was adopted by loving parents, as they grow up. Eventually, Jack invents some kind of hypnotizing machine, coercing his adopted parents to kill themselves, and then he's off looking for both his sister Dora and his real parents. Meanwhile, Dora's hooked up psychically and physically with some older man named Teddy (played by Bruno Lawrence in a lifeless performance), who she employs to help find her brother Jack.
