VHS : Strategic Air Command
Dutch Holland (James Stewart) was in the Air Force during WWII, but once his term was over, he picked up his old life again and joined a baseball league. He even got married to a beautiful and loving woman named Sally (June Allyson). One day, just when things are looking good for the family, he's asked to leave his job and join the Air Force again. Sally doesn't think he will, but he agrees quickly and loves his job. Despite the danger involved with flying, Dutch takes to it like a duck in water. He soon becomes in charge of his own crew, much to the chagrin of his wife.

This movie boasts its airplanes quite a lot and its popular cast not as much. In fact, Stewart requested to make this movie because of his own time in the Air Force during the war. He is excellent in the film, ... Read More

This serial had many firsts. I recognized the actor Bruce Bennett who went on to make dozens of movies and live into the 21st century. Ayn Rand would have loved the heavy, known by his prison number 39013.
My cildhood buddy still uses it as his liscence number. It is the story of how a bitter, spiteful failure sets out to destroy a "good capitalist"
Like the movies of its day it had good role models, but was not above using a comic sterotype black as the house servant, whose small daily frustrations are actually laughed at. In his bio, director William Witney was aware of this, but foundjustificatio in the fact a role was even created for mostly out-of-work black actors. The heroine is Carole Landis, a beautiful girl whose career took her to stardom at 20th Century Fox then downhill to a tragic suicide. I had not known ... Read More

'Guffy' McGovern's the roughest guy in baseball and he manages the worst team in baseball, the Pittsburgh Pirates (many actual scenes from the old Forbes Field). When the local paper assigns the Home Economics reporter (Janet Leigh) to cover the Pirates to try and find a different angle since they're losing all the time and nobody is following the team, she confronts McGovern about his attitude and he replies, 'Dogs have fleas, managers have sportswriters'. After being thrown out of a game for the umpteenth time, 'Guffy' can't find his pin and goes to look for it on the field after the game. It is there sitting on 2nd base under the stars he encounters an angel and his life is changed. No more bad guy. Amazingly the team's fortunes start to change, also. It becomes even more mysterious when Janet Leigh writes an article about a young, orphan girl ... Read More

This is one of the better historical films made about the war in the Pacific. and the 'thirties and 'forties aviation navy.

I was in naval aviation near the time this was written about, and know the aircraft depicted. The depictions are accurate; one of the rare movies not to throw in the wrong airplane in a battle scene. Like many other similar films about that period (Midway, Pearl Harbor, Tora, Tora, Tora, etc.) using U.S. Navy film footage from the color documentary, filmed aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise, The Fightin Lady, the footage shown was appropriate for the type of aircraft shown, including my favorite naval fighter of all time, the F6F "Hellcat" Grumman fighter which is credited with shooting down nearly eighty percent of all Japanese aircraft shot down in combat in the Pacific in whole war, closely followed by ...
