VHS : Born Yesterday
Hollywood magic, they just don't make em like this anymore. Born Yesterday made an overnight star of Judy Holliday, when 3 days before the Broadway opening, Jean Arthur dropped out due to illness, and Holliday, on a diet of coffee and cigarettes, learned and opened in the role to rapturous reviews. The rest is history, Katherine Hepburn brought her out to Hollywood to appear in Adam's Rib, and she was a star. She did win the Oscar for re-creating her Born Yesterday role on film. And an Oscar winning role it sure is, every gesture, nuance and expression, are dead on. Holliday was brilliant at playing the dumb blonde when in reality she was anything but...she was actually extremely educated and I've heard rumors that she was a member of Mensa. True or not, she was an amazingly gifted performer! Sadly ... Read More

VHS : Beau Geste
This is an action-filled movie that gains momentum when the three brothers leave their family and join the French Foreign Legion together in a wave of disgust over their father's weaknesses. The brotherly affection and loyalty is the main theme of the story, and it is touching and heartrending without being overly sentimental. Cooper, Milland, Hayward and Donleavy are brilliant. It was, is, and always will be a great film about true nobility of the heart as opposed to nobility of the blood.

VHS : The Oscar

I had wanted to see this movie for years, after only knowing the parody SCTV did in the early 80s ("The Nobel")...It exceeded all my expectations; I would say SCTV's version only exaggerated the film by about 10 percent! The real reason to watch is Tony Bennett as the jewish-Irishman Hymie Kelly (do you think we'd get it, with a name like that?):his performance is the opposite of his singing range, a 1-note, over-the-top set-devouring scream! The 'climactic' scene where he beats up Steven Boyd with a wastepaper basket must be seen to be believed!
I really love this film, though, because it represents the final moments of classic Hollywood, before the poisonous influence of late-60s "youth culture"(beginning with BONNIE AND CLYDE) lead American movies down the path of tedious "naturalism" and nihilistic ... Read More

VHS : Fastest Gun Alive (Col)
Glenn Ford played everything from a school teacher, a preacher, to an Aircraft carrier commander. But the western is where he made his name as far a public popularity! "The Fastest Gun Alive" rates up there with "Heaven With A Gun" and "The Last Challenge." All three of these Glenn Ford westerns are definitely worth the time, but this is not only my favorite of the three, it's my all time favorite of Glenn's classic work. The story grabs your attention from the very outset and just gets better as it moves to the end, which has a neat twist to it!
If you're a western fan, you won't be disappointed with this one!

VHS : The Castilian
This spanish-made "spectacle" was released a year after "El Cid" and takes a different look at the medieval Spanish wars between the Moors and the Christians. Whereas the Charlton Heston epic carried a message of unity for loyal Spaniards, whether Moorish or Christian, this movie is a flat out jingoistic anti-Moorish propaganda film. Both movies had large casts, huge battle scenes, a struggle of a hero to unite Spain, a romance, and are told in a style evoking tales told by medieval troubadors. "El Cid," however, has garnered both critical and popular accolades and is actually a damn fine movie, though its stylistic earnestness gets an occasional campy snicker. "The Castilian"'s stylistic earnestness fails to impress and the production values show a depressing cheapness for what was supposed to be such a big movie.

VHS : Black Cat (1941)
I never saw this film growing up and I'm sure it was because of the confusion with the earlier classic Universal film with the same title starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi(1934). 'The Black Cat' listed here is a murder/mystery/comedy from 1941. The film stars Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi in a fun supporting character. I did like this fun film full of secret passages and things that go bump in the night. This is available on DVD on a 2 disc set called Universal Horror and it is a limited release only sold at Best Buy. The DVD transfers for all 5 of the films are very good. I rate this film 3 1/2 stars.
