I have seen this movie once on ABC. I loved it. Then I searched for hours on amazon because I couldn't remember the name. I finally found it and have searched on different occasions for a DVD version. This is a must see for all families. I hope it comes out on DVD soon!!

In the film, it is 1861 and little Johnny Clem has run away to become a drummer boy at the age of 10 for the "Blue Marauders" platoon of the Union Army. He can't stand them going to war without him since he has drilled with them as their mascot drummer in his home town for so long before getting their orders move out. He is too young to serve at 10 and he is returned home, only to run back again. i give this fine mini-series 4 stars because this one was used to set up the rest of the series but for reasons unknown they stoped after this one. philip kent is now an old man(and now played by martin millner)and his son's are now the focus of the series. randolph mantooth is quite good as the oldest son who must do things for himself.his trek west with wife and new child is the focus of the first part and we get to see how hard the way really was and leaves us with very powerful images of the life and death daily life of our andercesters. the second part follows kent's two grandchildren as they fight for their part of the american dream. very well done,and i hope to see the other books turned into mini-series someday.

Yes, this has faults, many glaring. But it was created for the Texas Sesquicentennial celebration and was aired during the time of year of the battle (if I remember correctly). It was made to be entertaining and appeal to the young people (Alex Baldwin; the young lovers-the girl was played by a former Miss Texas, I think; the marvelous Raul Julia, who practically stole the show), who have to study Texas history twice before they graduate there. As a fifth-generation native Texan (currently exiled in Georgia) I love the Alamo story and its various conflicting legends, understanding that because of the veil of history and the way that Santa Ana tried to obliterate the battle site we may never know the entire truth of the matter.
