"Hear My Song" (1992), an Irish film, a romantic musical comedy/drama, was written by its star, Adrian Dunbar, with Peter Chelsom, its first-time director, and is filmed on location in gritty Liverpool, England, and the lovely Irish countryside. It's based on the life story of the Irish tenor Josef Locke, born Joseph McLaughlin, who knew great success in England, but was driven back to his home country by the tax man.

Adrian Dunbar, a frequently-seen actor, plays Micky O'Neill, who has leased a down-at-heels Liverpool nightclub from the large and boisterous Irish-English Ryan family (Liverpool has lots of Irish immigrants, and their descendents). He proceeds to run the club further into the ground through bad bookings; first there's Franc Cinatra, then Mr. X, allegedly Joe Locke. ... Read More

I typically like the more abstract and intellectually masturbatory films of this nature and I'm rather fond of dark satire so this should be a huge winner for me. I'm afraid it wasn't.

Certainly there were some very cool elements technologically, I rather enjoyed the somewhat steampunk design of what the world might look like now if everything had gone a different direction.

That's really where my enjoyment ended, I think the narrative was too scattered and I never felt emotionally invested in the characters. As a story had interesting concepts but I think they were all done better and more appropriately a work like 1984 and the characters actions and emotions were so absurd that I wasn't sure I ever believed they were real.

Our poor star of the movie ... Read More

Dante Hicks: [phone rings and Dante falls out of a closet] Hello. What? No I don't work today, I'm playing hockey at two.
=====================

'Clerks' is the debut film of Kevin Smith, inspired by Richard Linklater's 'Slackers;' and it is the first movie in the 'View Askew' universe, a series of Kevin Smith films with interlocking characters and references. 'Clerks' is a student film financed with credit cards and loans from friends. An interesting bit of trivia is that the entire production cost only $26,000 and securing the rights to the music cost $27,000, more than the cost of making the film. With over 50% of the budget in the music, you'd think they'd have some really great songs, but you'd be wrong. Just run-of-the-mill punk and metal.

This is a great documentary that starts with the SDS and how some of there members formed the weather underground movement. It is not a one sided story glorifying the movement which you can get with many films that deal with subjects like this. It actually made me sad because a lot of these people had good intentions but just did not get it together. This definitely broadened my understanding of the weathermen

VHS : Strictly Sinatra
Ian Hart is very charismatic as a small-time night club singer who, as the title says, sings "strictly Sinatra" tunes. He does this surprisingly well and turns out an impressive performance in this small, sweet movie. It's a very good film, especially if you enjoy the music of Frank Sinatra, whom Ian Hart's character (Tony Cocozza) completely idolizes. Brian Cox rocks, as usual, playing a mob lieutenant. Hart endears himself to the top mob boss who likes his singing. There's also a cute romance included and a wonderful, uplifting climax with Hart singing "My Way". Check it out, I'm sure you'll like it too.
