Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

VHS : In Old Chicago
After years of being only available in a cut 94-minute version, this Fox Classics DVD includes both that and the original roadshow version - with interesting results. In its uncut 110-minute roadshow version, In Old Chicago plays like an even more obvious ripoff of San Francisco, merely substituting Tyrone Power, Don Ameche, Alice Faye and the Chicago fire for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Jeanette MacDonald and the San Francisco earthquake and adding more twee Oirish antics than are healthy. The musical numbers are a step down too, particularly Faye's rendition of Carry Me Back to Old Virginny complete with `massa' lyrics, and the finale isn't as grand on screen as it is in your memory: the scenes of the crowds of refugees on the banks tend to be far more effective than the backlot chaos. Still, ... Read More

This is an action-filled movie that gains momentum when the three brothers leave their family and join the French Foreign Legion together in a wave of disgust over their father's weaknesses. The brotherly affection and loyalty is the main theme of the story, and it is touching and heartrending without being overly sentimental. Cooper, Milland, Hayward and Donleavy are brilliant. It was, is, and always will be a great film about true nobility of the heart as opposed to nobility of the blood.

4.Two Years Before the Mast (B&W) starring: Alan Ladd, Brian Donlevy, William Bendix, Barry Fitzgerald, Howard Da Silva

VHS : Two Years Before the Mast (B&W)
An all star cast under the fine direction of John Farrow gave a quality performance in "Two Years Before the Mast" based on a 1840 novel by Richard Henry Dana. Dana's book was an expose of the deplorable conditions that merchant seaman were forced to live under while asea and under the orders of the ship's captain.

In this film Alan Ladd stars as Charles Stewart a spoiled dandy and son of a wealthy Boston shipping magnate in the 1830's. He accidently is pressed into service aboard one of his father's merchant ships the S.S. Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is commanded by the unsympathetic Capt. Thompson played marvelously by Howard DaSilva. DaSilva cares nothing about the well being of his crew allowing them to starve, contract scurvey and get flogged mercilessly. Also aboard is author Dana who is serving ... Read More

I have waited years to see this movie again. Of course, it's not as creepy as I remembered it but I still enjoyed it. A must addition to my sci fi collection.

6.Kiss of Death starring: Victor Mature, Brian Donlevy, Coleen Gray, Richard Widmark, Taylor Holmes

VHS : Kiss of Death
****1/2 1947. Directed by Henry Hathaway. Richard Widmark, in his first role, earned a Golden Globe (Most promising newcomer) and an Academy award nomination, so does Eleazar Lipsky for the screenplay. Victor Mature accepts to become a snitch in order to be with his children. KISS OF DEATH is a classic film noir shot on location as often in movies produced by 20th Century Fox at that time. Classic scenes like the murder of Rizzo's mother by Widmark, the first hold-up or Richard Widmark's laugh already belong to history. Highly recommended and a valuable addition to your library.

VHS : Command Decision
One of the earliest attempts to show the politics and terrible strain on a leader's conscience as America debates the effectiveness of daylight bombing. Great dialogue, made more intense by Clark Gable, Walter Pidgeon, and Brian Donleavy. Not much in the way of plane shots.....I suggest Twelve O'Clock High for more of that, and we do not see the leaders crack as they do in Twelve O'Clock High. Not much in the way of extras.

VHS : Destry Rides Again
Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart make a great combination in "DESTRY RIDES AGAIN". This movie was directed by none other than George Marshall (who would remake it in 1954 starring Audie Murphy), was suggested by the novel "Destry Rides Again" by Max Brand, and co-starred Brian Donlevy, Mischa Auer, Charles Winninger, and Una Merkel. The basic story is quite simple, actually. The brawling town of Bottleneck is run with an iron fist by Donlevy, and one night, the town sheriff Keogh is "mysteriously" killed, and a new sheriff Washington Dimsdale (Winninger) previously the town drunk, is appointed for the job. But he feels that by himself, he will not be enough, so he summons Tom Destry, Jr. (Stewart) to come and help him out. What eventually happens in the end I would not dream of telling, but I feel that much more of the film is devoted to the ... Read More
