VHS : High Road to China
"High Road to China" is a classic. It had a great cast and good directing. The movie had action, adventure, comedy, danger, romance, and history. Tom Selleck is at his best. Bess Armstrong gives a stellar performance; as do Jack Weston, Wilford Brimley, et al. As with his movies, T.S's presence on the silver screen, doesn't overpower the other actors/actresses. It is a crime against good films not to view it, let alone not to own it !

VHS : Tarzan (Walt Disney)
Somewhere in 2000, Disney quietly launched a special 2 disc collector's edition of "Tarzan" the same year as its paltry one disc edition. For some reason it advertised the one disc version heavily, which is a shame because the collector's edition is a gem not to be missed by fans. Unfortunately I didn't know about it until years after its release, and by then it was out of print, hard to find, and expensive. Luckily I found a copy that was decently priced, and was finally able to get my hands on this remarkable edition. I see this as the "Tarzan" DVD for adults: instead of cartoony illustrations on the jacket, there's Glen Keane's famous sketch of Tarzan peering at you with those intense eyes. The menus are extremely well designed and the commentaries are entertaining and insightful. It's ... Read More

VHS : I, Claudius
I belong to the generation that saw high-budget Roman period productions such as Ridley Scott's Gladiator, HBO's Rome, and even the Polish adaptation of Quo Vadis (highly recommended). Having also been brought up in the States and becoming something of a classicist during my later education, I had read Robert Graves' books I, Claudius and Claudius the God, and heard of the BBC miniseries and always meant to see it, though not expecting much due to the age of the series and low budget it required to be realized.

When the chance came I snagged up the DVD series, and was so taken by the marvelous acting, intricate yet engaging storyline, and historical accuracy (it is not 100% accurate, but it is more accurate than the likes of Gladiator or HBO's ROME), that I watched the entire ... Read More

VHS : Hamlet (1996)
I was overwhelmed by this production of Hamlet. Kenneth Branagh is wonderful and plays the part of Hamlet with such sensitivity and vitality - makes the unabridged lines accessible, even to people unused to Shakespeare. Kate Winslet is excellent. The whole cast and the scenes - especially the scenes - are staggeringly good. The only Hamlet on film, worth watching! Kenneth Branagh is a genius.

VHS : Flash Gordon
Maybe I could have understood the movie better if I wasn't having so much fun watching it! Why are Sam and Dale stuck out in the universe instead of going back to earth? Well, I'd stay out in space if the alternative was the dreary, dust-ridden planet we get a glimpse of at the beginning of the film. The movie picks up steam and color as soon as Dr. Zharkov kidnaps our hero and heroine and whisks them off to save the planet, and especially when they reach the court of the fabulous Ming the Merciless. Ridiculed for its "camp" qualities when it came out, and for the inadequate and dubbed acting of Sam J. Jones as "Flash," FLASH GORDON in fact tells its story in a relatively straightforward manner, while Jones is unexpectedly winning in a difficult role; as soon as he remembers his football plays in a push ... I love this movie. I owned it on VHS and was looking to upgrade, so I bought this DVD. It's a 2 sided disc so you have to turn the disc over half way through the movie just to watch the rest. Lame. I was also a bit disappointed that the video by Bryan Adams wasn't at the end with the credits like it was on the VHS. It was also at the end of the movie in the movie theatre too, so I'm not sure why they would exclude it on the DVD. I love this movie and hate to give it any thing less than a 4, but because of the DVD format, I'm giving it a 2.

VHS : Freddie the Frog
I remember seeing this movie when I was very young, and while it's not the best animated film I've ever seen, it's certainly not the worst. The animation is satisfactory, and Freddie IS rather handsome and charming for a frog. Everyone has their own opinion about this film, of course, but maybe you negative critics out there are being just a wee bit too harsh. There are movies out there that are far worse than this one, you know.
