VHS : Angels in the Outfield
In an attempt to repeat the magic and financial success they had with `The Mighty Ducks' (92) two years previously, Disney turned their attention to major league baseball and the hometown Angels. Deciding to do a remake of the '51 film `Angels in the Outfield' which starred Paul Douglas they had all they needed available right from the beginning; a tried and true storyline to work from and access to a local, professional baseball team. What could make things more perfect? Well how about the fact that the team in question just happened to be named the Angels fitting perfectly into the title and theme of the proposed film! Ahh..., the genius of the Disney machine is a beautiful thing to observe isn't it?

The end result of their endeavors, `Angels in the Outfield' is definitely a ... Read More

An exquisite novel, but Alas, too short!

And yet, it conjures unforgettable characters and evokes Prague in a way that makes you recognize it even if you've never been there.

It isn't just the main characters that are memorable, but all of the characters in this story, no matter how small a space they take up. Characters such as Orlik, the paleontologist who studies house-flies and who asked the narrator to examine Dutch and Flemish still-lifes of the seventeenth century "to check whether or not there was a fly in them", or the temperamentful ex-soprano who lived under Utz's apartment, or the man whose job was emptying garbage trucks, but who spoke English and was a writer, or the Ludvik and Zitek, other "garbage collectors" who were actually poets, writers, philosophers ... VHS : Journey
Jason Robards was quite a gem. They don't make actors like that anymore. The move captures love and loss, and the angst of relationships that we all feel from time to time. Life doesn't have to be perfect, but it can be GOOD ENOUGH. Great lessons from this film. There should be more family films these days. Our TV and movie screens are too filled with violence and vulgarity.

VHS : So I Married an Axe Murderer
This movie came out around the same time as the Wayne's World so it slipped under the radar screen. If you like Mike Myers' movies you will like this one. It has a good supporting cast and a not bad story line. It has made the rounds on premium cable channels and I'm glad to say is now part of my library.

VHS : Out of Ireland - Irish Emigration to America
I ordered this DVD with high hopes. As it is entitled "Out of Ireland", I thought it might address the issue of Irish immigration with some depth in a manner that would interest, mostly, fourth graders. In fact, it ignores the controversy that once existed in this country regarding the influx of the Irish. There are strange clips of what my son described as "some old guy singing boring stuff nobody can understand." I suppose the bits of musical interlude were meant to add something artistic or nostalgic to the movie. Unfortunately, they slowed the "action" and didn't add anything to the understanding of the subject. I was so bored I began to feel weepy with frustration. I did not subject my class to it.

Albert Finney is superb, as always. Supporting cast are also very believable. The story line is not complex, but allows/requires the viewer to do a bit of interpretation. Good human drama.

VHS : The Field
"The Field," (1990), an Irish movie, was the second to be made by the talented Irish director Jim Sheridan, who also gets the screenwriting credit on it. It was made from the well-known and -loved play of the same name by John B. Keane, who was a small-town publican in Co. Kerry, and evidently paid very close attention to what was going on around him. It's based on a true story about a bitter land dispute between a local man, "The Bull McCabe," played by noted Irish actor Richard Harris, who collected an Oscar nomination for his performance; and "The Yank," played by Tom Beringer. John Hurt also had a starring role, playing "Bird O'Donnell,"the sort of part that the older English actor John Mills had made his own, the wily village idiot.

The movie was filmed not in Co. Kerry, but in Co. Mayo, in the village ... Read More
