VHS : Hobson's Choice
For those who didn't know, and I was one of them, a Hobson's choice is a free choice, but where only one option is really available. At the end of Hobson's Choice, a fine, vulgar, poignant and very funny film directed by David Lean, this is what Henry Horatio Hobson faces. Elements of the plot are discussed.

Hobson (Charles Laughton) is a prosperous shoe and boot merchant in the small town of Salford, England. The time is the 1880s. Hobson is a widower, a blusterer, a man accustomed to his comforts, his drink and his ease. He is, thanks to Laughton, larger than life, a man we can laugh at but not a man we'd probably want as a neighbor. He has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) is 30. She is, says her father, "a bit ripe" for marriage at her age, and he plans to keep it ... Read More

VHS : The Man Who Knew Too Much
In my humble opinion, some of the best movies I've ever seen were good old classics like this one. Although I am only 22 years of age, Jimmy Stewart is one of my favorite actors, and this is my favorite of Hitchcock's works. Doris Day outdid herself as the mourning mother, and the two of them did a very good job playing a married couple. I think this movie, as far as the acting is concerned, was way ahead of its time. Method acting was still in its infancy (if that) but the two of them did such an outstanding job, especially in the scene when Jimmy Stewart's character first tells Doris Day's character that their son has been kidnapped. The boy was my only complaint about the whole movie. Kids really didn't know how to act back then. So if you're looking for a good mystery/suspense as only Hitchcock ... Read More

VHS : The Pink Panther Movie Collection/Box Set
The issue of this Pink Panther compendium is rather disappointing for a few important reasons. I knew that RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER would probably not be included for legal reasons and 1968's INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU with Alan Akin as Clouseau as well, but I did expect to have CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER and SON OF THE PINK PANTHER included.

THE PINK PANTHER is a film richly textured with well defined characters, plot, dialogue, production design and location photography. Niven, Sellers and Wagner give very fine performances, which seem to remain fresh and vibrant to this day. Images of the Cortina ski lodge, the costume ball, the wild car chase and especially the animated Pink Panther are part of the iconic cinematic contribution from this film and Henry Mancini's theme and score are equally ... This movie is just full of stars that will never be forgotten...
I watched this movie with my mother so very many times when I was a little girl.
When I watch it now I can almost still feel her sitting next to me laughing.

I just didn't find this funny at all. Niven was in movies that were much funnier. Just wasn't what I expected. In fact, beat me up if you like, but I much prefer Steve Martin's version.

Does anybody actually watch these films before reviewing them? One reviewer, basing comments on childhood memories, says this movie is in black and white. In fact, it's in wonderful color (using an old process that makes every scene look beautifully hand-tinted)! As for the movie, this is a sentimental tale of the very best kind, a story about caring and sharing and childhood innocence made by a first-rate director (Oscar-winner Carol Reed). It's a largely forgotten treasure that richly deserves its new life on DVD.
