VHS : Fight Club
Sick and tired of corporate American greed, Norton's character seeks comfort in a few weird places. He eventually meets Pitt's character on a plane ride home. Circumstance puts them together soon after and the Fight Club emerges. The end result is bringing down the system and that is a metaphor for what Norton's character goes through till the end. Add Helena Carter's character, Marla Singer, recently in the Sweeney Todd remake, and you have the dark necessary to truly make this movie work.

Be honest with yourself, did you notice the Brad Pitt "Blips" the first time? If you said yes then you are either a LIAR or you like to expand your mind...Whether you did or not, this movie is one of the best.

This comedy is pitch black and brought to you by Director David ... Read More

VHS : Growing Up Grizzly
Doug Seuss' performance as a bear trainer is incredible! He's able to make himself the two-legged equivalent of a grizzly while participating in their never-ending rough-and-tumble play and maintaining control. The death of Bart is a sad moment; fortunately the Seuss' also obtain two new grizzly cubs at about the same time, and this video documents their growing up and learning to be movie actors. A side impact is that it destroys any belief that grizzlies are uncaring, unthinking and beastly.

Brad Pitt's narration was also impressive - not some dry, condescending reading, but that of a person who is also quite impressed with the Seuss's and their bears.

VHS : Sinbad - Legend of the Seven Seas
The legend of Fa Mulan was one of my favorite stories as a Chinese-American growing up in San Francisco some decades ago. I now live abroad and generally make it back to the Bay Area every summer. The year that "Mulan" was released, I didn't get to San Francisco until after its initial theatrical run. I did find it at a smaller neighborhood theater and my father immediately agreed to see it with me. To my great surprise, what we saw was a special version dubbed in Cantonese. My Chinese wasn't good enough to catch most of it, but I could understand enough to not have to pester my father with questions throughout the movie. About halfway through, he asked if I could recognize the voice of the captain. I couldn't, and with a smile he told me it was Jackie Chan. My father passed away almost three years ago, so that is now a very cherished ... Read More

VHS : Meet Joe Black (Special Edition)
I'm a huge movie buff and find myself partial to dramatic, personal performances. MJB wasn't the blockbuster event when released and I believe, as many of you, this film has been tragically overlooked. Luckily, it seems to have resurfaced and grown some new legs.

The dialogue is mysterious, cryptic and haunting to say the least. Your heart will tear and heal several times. The storyline paces you through the dynamic, father/daughter relationship, our own inevitable mortality, and several, classic displays of integrity.

Anyone who has a strong sense of self and a sincere hope that good things come to deserved people will enjoy where this journey takes you. So many life lessons are front and center through out.

Do yourself a favor if you've not taken this one in yet- rent it, buy it. Invest ... Read More

VHS : Legends of the Fall
Usually, watching a film adaptation of a book or story is a letdown. But in the case of Legends Of The Fall I'd have to say it is advisable to read the story before watching the film as it is helpful in understanding the motivations of the characters, even though the film differs greatly from the novella.

The film didn't--couldn't--portray character motivation as the story by Jim Harrison does. Watching the film without the background of the novella will have you wondering why the hell Suzanne and Tristan react like they do. It's difficult to catch the guilt of Tristan who fails to "take care of Samuel" and the manic depression suffered by Suzanne. The film, on it's own, cannot convey the clash of tradition against the new of the industrial revolution and a changing West.

Read the wonderful novella by Jim Harrison, ... Read More
