VHS : Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! / Horton Hears a Who!
This is always a good cartoon for Christmas time, and it's a hard-core classic. The Grinch dresses up as Santa Claus and steals all the presents from Who-Ville. Will he ever learn the true meaning of Christmas? I highly recommend HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS!!!

VHS : The Bride of Frankenstein
I JUST WATCHED "THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN" FOR THE FIRST TIME (73 YEARS AFTER ITS MAKING). WHILE MOVIE MAKING HAS OBVIOUSLY TRAVELED LIGHT YEARS FROM THE TECHNIQUES USED IS THIS FILM, IT IS STILL A TRUE CLASSIC IN HORROR FILMDOM.
ASIDE FROM JUST A FEW OUT OF FOCUS SHOTS LEFT IN THE FILM, SUCH AS THE TOUCHING OF HANDS IN THE "REBUFFED" SCENE, THIS IS STILL A CREEPY AND RATHER SCARY FILM THAT IS TRULY TIMELESS.
IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO SEE A LITTLE MORE OF THE BRIDE..BUT MAYBE THE BEST WAS TRULY SAVED FOR THE END THIS TIME.
I COULDN'T HELP BUT FEEL SORRY FOR THE BIG FELLA AS HE TRIED AND TRIED TO BEFRIEND MANY HE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH...BUT WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF A 7 FOOT SQUARE HEADED MAN-CREATURE HAPPENED UPON YOU?
THIS IS A GREAT FILM. I WOULD PAY TO SEE THIS MOVIE ... Read More

VHS : Frankenstein
I bought this dvd to show my students after having read Frankenstein, well, both the students and I found the movie laughably bad. Yes, some of that is due to the technological limits of the time, but some of the other problems are inexcusable (why are Victor and Henry's names switched? Why does the movie start of the way it doe?, etc.) All and all, it is a movie I wished I would have rented rather than purchasing because it is doubtful that I will ever use it in my classroom again.

VHS : Charlie Chan: At the Opera
1937's "Charlie Chan at the Opera" is a better than average episode in the long running Charlie Chan series. Warner Oland stars as the titular Honolulu Police Detective, with Keye Luke as Number One Son, while Boris Karloff has an outstanding guest role as an escaped mental patient now haunting an opera house in the manner of "The Phantom of the Opera."

The story opens with Karloff's escape from a mental institution, then presents a murder at an Opera House to draw in Charlie Chan. Chan is his usual inscrutable self in his police work, with veteran character actor William Demarest (Uncle Charlie of "My Three Sons") as his none-too-bright foil on the local police force. The plot itself is filled with the usual collection of suspects and more than the usual number of red herrings; only the most attentive ... Read More

VHS : The Mummy
Ah, "The Mummy" on Halloween night! What could be better? My brother and I, now aging boomers, were allowed as children the special treat to stay up on Friday nights to watch Horror Theater (or whatever it was called) and scare ourselves silly. This was in the late '50's. "The Mummy" was a favorite, so when I found this VHS tape in the library, I took it home for Halloween.

After a couple of hours of Trick or Treating, the three children were ready to go home. We put on the movie, expecting magic to revisit. Their grandfather (my brother) and I expected to pass on a tradition. We really thought the nine-year-old boy would delight in the movie. He loves things like this. However, it was too slow for him--he fell asleep soon into the movie, as did the other two children.

That left my brother and me to stroll ... Read More

An excellent movie with Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard. Funny seeing Boris Karloff as the Seneca chief. After several years trying to find this movie on DVD, it was fantastic to finally find it in this format. A definite must-buy for lovers of American history.

Raving About Roger Corman's The Raven (1963)

Every October my daughter and I pick up a few spooky movies to get into the Halloween groove. This year, I had the pleasure of introducing her to one of my all time favourite horror comedy classics, Director Roger Corman's "The Raven." The screenplay is adapted (VERY loosely) from the famous Edgar Allan Poe poem. This is one of Corman's many American International Picture adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe's works, and one of his best.

As the king of "b" horror movies, Corman knew had to make the most out of a tight budget. His stylish films consistently used good source material, well written screenplays, lavish set designs, locations, props, costumes and great horror stars. "The Raven" boasts no less a cast than Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Jack Nicholson, ... Read More
