ASIN First Family (1980)

Twenty years ago, before leaving for work, I would set the timer to record lunchtime movies. Some were real finds, like First Family. Madeline Kahn's comedic set pieces as First Lady are hilarious. Bob Newhart is the badly behaved President. I can believe that it received poor reviews. In the way that throw away gags sail over the tops of peoples' heads. Sure, parts are unfunny, but for those with a willing suspension of disbelief, enjoy and get it put onto DVD!

VHS : 101 Dalmatians II - Patch's London Adventure
Wow! Never thought I'd see a Disney sequel that I enjoyed more than the original! After seeing all the garbage that followed the real classics like "The Rescuers Down Under", "Cinderella II: Dreams Come True" or "The Return of Jafar", it's surprising to come across this jewel among Disney sequels!

It features a unique and inovative plot, something rare in a sequel, but what impressed me the most was that it seemed that the film makers tried hard this time, by making the film seem like the original, with the rough-drawn backgrounds and rough animation. It was an attempt to make a decent and likeable follow up without trying to copy the whole thing (Not like "the Rescuers II" in which not only they tried to turn the whole original into a comedy, but also completely ripped-off ... VHS : Reefer Madness (B&W)
Reefer Madness In college, I saw this movie several times and it always mad me laugh - and it still does. It was created in 1936 to warn people about the dangers of marijuana, but they missed the boat. Way over-acted, ridiculous dialogue, but funny!

VHS : Hannah & Her Sisters
Hannah and Her Sisters is Woody Allen's third best film (Annie Hall and Manhattan are 1 and 2) I liked this film, it is quirky and touching. The best performance goes to Dianne Weist, she is such a natural, she's cute and refreshing in this film. Michael Caine is also good as well, I just wish Mia Farrow wasn't in this, she brings down the film with her sour facial expressions. Lovely romantic comedy for new and old fans of Allen's work.

MICHAEL Caine is a super cool, ex-MI6 Intelligence Officer who gets sucked back into the treacherous and deceitful world of espionage when he tries to help his paramour played by curvaceous, voluptous, sensuous Sean Young. She is the inspiration for the movie's unusual title. Sexy Sean Young just happens to be the wife of the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom and is one hell of a raunchy lady (check out the shower scene!). Michael owns a Jazz Club but beneath his dark and ruthless side, he has a gleaming heart of gold. The movie sound track is full of superb jazz. His old Spy Boss puts in a sterling performance as the typical stiff upper lip Establishment British gent but is he all that he seems? In all goo dspy movies nothing is as it seems. Michael Caine shows that he can handle a Browning Hi Power 9mm autoloading ... Read More

VHS : You're the Top: Cole Porter Story
An enjoyable overview of Porter's life and career. Far too short for my liking but an improvement on that dire "DELOVELY" movie.
The contributions from Porter's friends and collaborators is a treasure as most of them have passed on.

Cole, edited by Robert Kimball.
