VHS : So Dear to My Heart
We see an old scrapbook as the narrator recalls that the summer of 1903 was a special one for him and is still dear to his heart. Then the story begins and we meet young Jerry who lives on the farm with his tough but loving Granny. A newborn black lamb has been rejected by its mother and Jerry convinces Granny to let him raise it, against her better judgment. And even though Danny the lamb is a lot of trouble, Jerry still dreams of taking him to the County Fair.

This Disney tale of childhood innocence is very simple; there are no tragedies on the road to a happy ending, just an amazingly cute little boy and his ornery lamb. As Jerry, Bobby Driscoll didn't have to do anything for me to fall in love with him (although he's a very good actor!); just one look at that beautiful ... Read More

I saw this movie when I was a kid of course and now that I teach US History was hoping that it might work in place of the ever popular Saving Private Ryan. The movie is all about the background of the boys, how they grew up, the relationship they had as brothers, their fighting spirit and how they tried to make sure they stayed together in the military (in this case the Navy) during the war. I have to be honest, since I was looking at this film for use in my class I was hoping for more story of them on the ship but that part takes all of about 10 minutes. But as far as good old movies go - this is a delight.

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out in 1950 and Robert Newton's iconic portrayal of Long John Silver has stayed with me ever since! Something made me think about it a few weeks ago and I was delighted to find that it was available on DVD, but with some trepidation because so many old movies like this have not aged well and disappointed on seeing again. Fear not, me hearties, this one is the best! I've had it 3 weeks and I've watched it 3 times already, even though I have 2 other DVDs bought at the same time that I haven't even watched at all yet! Exciting enough for anyone, and good family entertainment too.

VHS : Fallen Sparrow
Dorothy Hughes' best selling suspense novel translated into one of the best early film noir movies made. In a role originally offered to Jimmy Cagney, Garfield hit a magnificent major chord of acting. In an era before visual flashbacks of the mind, Garfield's voice-over and facial expressions nail a psychiatric basket-case destroyed by torture at the hands of the German secret police during the Spainsh Civil War. The plot is a little dated, but Maureen O'Hara gives one of her best performance and Walter Slezak is a great villian, oozing EVIL from every pore..

VHS : The Window
I have seen this terrific film on tv several times in past years and it is one of the best movies ever made. Bobby Driscoll is terrific in this movies among other movies that he has done. This movie may be old (1949) but it is a great movie compared to a lot of junkie movies that are made today. The whole cast are great and you sit on the edge of your seat.

This movie should be put on DVD. Like so many other good movies they are on VHS but are not on DVD and who knows whether this film will ever be released on DVD, I hope so. Like the saying it's a oldie but a goodie.
