VHS : State Fair
A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles.

He's at his punky best as the ambitious guy on the make, and delivers the best number of the movie in This Isn't Heaven, a song written especially for the movie. I wish he'd been cast in more musicals to utilize his wide range of talents, but it's great to see him here. Esp in the same movie with Ann Margaret, another triple threat.

VHS : Hell Is for Heroes
Steve in fine form as a rugged loner trapped by Germans with a few of his fellow dogfaces. More like a tv show than a movie because of the cheap set and low-budget look of the whole film it manages to sail along holding one's interest with lots of dramatic interest by scenery-chewers like Bob Newhart doing a long comedy shtick somewhat peculiarly in the middle of the film. This movie did a lot of good for McQueen's career and helped cement its status as a classic of the genre.

Even though Bobby Darin has only 10-15 minutes of screen time this is one of his best acting. He's just so natural and believable and poignent in this role. And it utilizes his skill with accents.

I'm really just rating Darin's performance as I've not bothered to watch the entire movie. :) I only bought it 'cause of Darin.

I wish it was out on DVD, but I'm glad to have it in any format.

This movie is just full of stars that will never be forgotten...
I watched this movie with my mother so very many times when I was a little girl.
When I watch it now I can almost still feel her sitting next to me laughing.

These idiots took perfectly good rare video material on these artists and wrote dumb, misspelled trivia questions over the performances and even blacked out some of the visual with countdown numbers. Don't waste even a nickel.

VHS : Bobby Darin - Mack is Back
I've been a firm believer and tauter of the genius of Bobby Darin ever since I saw this video run on my local PBS station. At first I was going to continue clicking past it when I thought it was just another episode of the Lawrence Welk show (sorry, it's just that everything looked like the Lawrence Welk show in the 70's) but then I heard Bobby sing. He was singing a Hank Williams tune and it was just dripping with soul. The look on the man's face, the sound of his voice, the way he moved, I could just tell that he meant every word he was singing. I was hooked, I put the remote down and finished out the program. Realizing that there was much that I missed, I went online and found it listed here and purchased it immediately. I've never been sorry. In fact, most of my DVD collection is one-time-use ... Purchase if you have to have everything of Darin.!! It is the only live performance of "Song of Freedom" I think, but other than that "Seeing is Believing" and "Beyond the Song" and "Mack is Back" are much better value

This is a very interesting series related to the how and the who of the Brill Building in relation to the composing of popular songs from the era. I enjoyed the whole series.
