VHS : Mickey & the Beanstalk
I can't believe that this has gotten bad reviews!!! The only two things you really need to be scared of when buying this VHS tape is that there might be tracking problems (but there weren't any), and that VHS is now uh, extinct (not that I mind) A very good cartoon. It used to be a part of Fancy Fun and Free, but I thought that this by itself would be better (and it was). It is narrated by Ludwig Von Drake and he appears with his cute little cricket, Herman three times in the "movie". This great Mickey Mouse cartoon is very funny, entertaining, and well animated. One awsome thing about Mickey and the Beanstalk was Mickey was voiced by Walt Disney himself! It also has some veeeeery catchy songs. I keep finding my self quietly singing some of those songs!

The plot is basically ... Read More

VHS : Anchors Aweigh
Yes, Anchors Aweigh is long. Very, very long (2 hours and 20 minutes) and best absorbed in two sittings, if possible.

However ... I, personally, have the attention span of a goldfish and this movie never left me bored. The plot is rather basic: two sailors (Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra) go on four-day leave and fall in with (and fall in love with) a beautiful young singer (Kathryn Grayson) and her little nephew (Dean Stockwell). What this movie is, more than anything, is a showcase for the incredible talent that MGM had to offer.

Vocally, Sinatra and Grayson are top of the class, with Sinatra crooning "Brahm's Lullaby" (to spectacularly soothing effect on Stockwell, Kelly, and the audience), "I Fall in Love Too Easily," and, my personal favorite, "What Makes The Sunset." Grayson ... Read More

VHS : Charlie Chaplin: Great Dictator
What a glorious, uplifting movie this is. A great cri de coeur against war and hatered, and in favor of tolerance and peace. That the message it presents is, by this point, somewhat of a given does nothing to diminish its importance.

You doubtless know of the plot by now. Charlie Chaplin, a man with a moustache suspiciously similar to a certain unpleasant fellow in history, plays the role of an anti-Semetic dictator named Hinkel and a poor Jewish barber. That these two look exactly the same is obvious. That the fact doesn't come in handy until the end is somewhat unexpected, but still great.

The movie avoids getting bogged down in all the obvious traps that await a film with content such as this. It doesn't become preachy until the very last couple minutes when the Little Tramp (not called that, ... Read More

VHS : Destry Rides Again
Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart make a great combination in "DESTRY RIDES AGAIN". This movie was directed by none other than George Marshall (who would remake it in 1954 starring Audie Murphy), was suggested by the novel "Destry Rides Again" by Max Brand, and co-starred Brian Donlevy, Mischa Auer, Charles Winninger, and Una Merkel. The basic story is quite simple, actually. The brawling town of Bottleneck is run with an iron fist by Donlevy, and one night, the town sheriff Keogh is "mysteriously" killed, and a new sheriff Washington Dimsdale (Winninger) previously the town drunk, is appointed for the job. But he feels that by himself, he will not be enough, so he summons Tom Destry, Jr. (Stewart) to come and help him out. What eventually happens in the end I would not dream of telling, but I feel that much more of the film is ... Read More
